The Medical Scientist - Bacteriology position is a critical role within the Microbiology Department, requiring a high level of scientific and technical expertise. As a key member of the team, you will be responsible for participating in the scientific and technical operation of the department, providing a 24-hour service.
The incumbent will apply scientific and technical knowledge/expertise and be competent in performing standard and more complex tests/duties across multiple technical methods and domains in the Microbiology department. They will prioritize test/duties to ensure timely delivery of results to clients, perform tests that are technically more complex, verify and authorize technical results from analytical tests, as directed, supervise and train other less experienced technical and scientific staff, and provide telephone advice to clients on technical and specimen-related problems.
As an experienced scientist, you will contribute to the development of techniques and methodologies, participating in research and development activities of the laboratory as required. You will also work as an effective team member with scientific, technical, and medical staff, assisting with the training and supervision of scientific or technical staff as needed.
Key Responsibilities- Participate in the scientific and technical operation of the Microbiology Department, providing a 24-hour service
- Apply scientific and technical knowledge/expertise to perform standard and more complex tests/duties
- Prioritize test/duties to ensure timely delivery of results to clients
- Perform tests that are technically more complex, verify and authorize technical results from analytical tests
- Supervise and train other less experienced technical and scientific staff
- Provide telephone advice to clients on technical and specimen-related problems
- Current National Police Clearance (NPC)
- Working with Children Check
- Immunisation screening as indicated in the role description
