About the Opportunity

The Central Australian Women's Legal Service (CAWLS) is seeking a Full-Time Civil Lawyer based in Tennant Creek, NT. Reporting to the Senior Management Team, you will be accountable for providing legal advice, representation, and referrals, primarily in areas such as family law, domestic violence, and child protection. Your responsibilities will include:

  • Providing high-quality legal advice and representation within CAWLS areas of practice
  • Assisting in the development and maintenance of the law practice and its systems
  • Delivering holistic and wrap-around services for clients
  • Representing clients in court and providing duty lawyer services
  • Conducting outreach to provide legal advice and representation
  • Planning, delivering, and evaluating community legal education resources and presentations

About You

To qualify, you will need to be eligible to hold a Practising Certificate in the Northern Territory and demonstrate the capacity to provide high-quality legal advice and casework. A minimum of two years' experience in an Australian legal practice is also essential. Additionally, the following skills and background will be highly valued:

  • Experience working with people from culturally and linguistically diverse (CALD) / First Nations backgrounds
  • Experience with general civil law matters, particularly domestic and family violence
  • Previous experience working in a Community Legal Centre
  • Experience using CLASS (database)

As our ideal candidate, you will possess strong teamwork and independent work skills, well-developed time management skills, and a commitment to social justice and equality. You will have excellent written and oral communication skills, including the ability to simplify legal jargon, and a personal commitment to reflection and self-care to build resilience and minimize the impact of vicarious trauma.

About the Benefits

You will receive a salary of circa $76,000 - $88,000 plus superannuation (commensurate with experience), along with a great host of benefits, including:
