Achieve Group is seeking a PO3 Fisheries Biologist

Key Responsibilities:

  • Engage and collaborate with fisheries stakeholders across Queensland.
  • Plan, prepare, and execute fieldwork on short notice, including challenging environments (e.g., remote locations, marine settings, adverse weather).
  • Gather and manage data using suitable software while adhering to quality assurance protocols.
  • Compile, manage, and perform quantitative analysis on datasets.
  • Assist in interpreting research findings and their dissemination in scientific publications and reports within specified deadlines.
  • Support the timely release of fisheries research outputs, including journal articles and reports.
  • Critically analyze issues and propose innovative practices to enhance operations.
  • Collaborate effectively within a team of scientists and technical personnel.
  • Establish and nurture productive relationships with internal and external stakeholders, including government, community, and industry representatives, to bolster fisheries research.
  • Contribute to the creation of outreach activities and materials to communicate research findings to the Queensland fisheries sector through written reports and presentations.
  • Ensure compliance with health and safety standards during boat, field, and laboratory activities.

Essential Qualifications:

  • Comprehensive knowledge of commercial fisheries and fishing gear performance.
  • Experience in the biology and ecology of target species in tropical fisheries and relevant assessment methodologies.

Highly Desirable Skills:

  • Proven experience in leveraging technologies and strategies to enhance fishing gear efficiencies.
  • Understanding of the evaluation processes for social, economic, and ecological performance of fisheries.
  • Strong communication abilities, particularly in building rapport with fisheries stakeholders and scientific communities.
  • Experience in project management and leading research initiatives.
  • Capability to collaborate with fisheries stakeholders on research endeavors.
  • Research background, including project design, data collection, and analysis related to fish and fisheries.
  • Possession of a recreational boat driver's license.

Mandatory Requirements:

  • A minimum of a Bachelor of Applied Science or Science in a relevant field (e.g., fisheries, biology, ecology, environmental science) from an accredited institution or equivalent qualifications.
  • Recent police clearance.
  • Current C class driver's license.

Contract Duration:
The department is looking for a contract engagement of up to three years.
