Position Overview
The Aerial Rescue Operations Officer plays a crucial technical role, adept in executing Search and Rescue (SAR), Emergency Medical Services (EMS), Rappelling, Sling Loading, Passenger Transport, and Winching Operations. This position is accountable to the aircraft captain for the secure and effective management of the aircraft's rear cabin during operational flights.
This role is conducted in diverse onshore and offshore settings, sharing the unified goal of providing assistance to individuals in emergency scenarios. Crews may encounter demanding and intricate tasks while operating under high-pressure conditions. Whether in SAR or EMS contexts, the potential for facing traumatic and challenging situations is significant and must be acknowledged when considering this career path.
In a client-focused environment, certain contracts may necessitate varied requirements, where Aerial Rescue Operations Officers are expected to competently and safely manage all aspects of their responsibilities, regardless of contract specifics. Additionally, crews must be prepared to adapt to various work schedules, including day and night operations throughout the year. Continuous proficiency training is essential, as is maintaining physical fitness and resilience under pressure.
Key Responsibilities
- Maintain dual qualifications as an Aerial Rescue Operations Officer and Rescue Crew Officer.
- Comply with all organizational policies and procedures.
- Conduct safe flight operations in accordance with operational manuals and relevant regulations.
- Assist in managing the aircraft's rear cabin during flight operations.
- Deliver appropriate flight and safety briefings.
- Possess thorough knowledge of all search and rescue equipment, ensuring safe and reliable operation.
- Complete necessary pre-flight and post-flight inspections and documentation.
- Prepare the aircraft for flight and manage post-flight procedures.
- Report any operational and maintenance safety deficiencies and assist in replacing unserviceable equipment.
- Provide first aid as needed, capable of performing under demanding conditions.
- Be willing to travel to various operational bases, including training and deployment sites.
- Successfully complete the company's fitness assessments periodically.
- Act as a visible safety advocate, challenging unsafe practices and promoting improvements in safety culture.
Qualifications, Skills & Attributes
Essential:
- Current CASA - Class II medical certification.
- Current Provide Advanced Resuscitation and Oxygen certification (HLTAID015).
- Current Provide First Aid certification (HLTAID011).
- Flight Radiotelephone Operators License (current).
- Must possess CASA approved hoist endorsement under CASR PART 133/13.
Desirable:
- Cert IV in Aviation (CASA compliance).
- Experience in SAR/EMS operations.
- Helicopter Underwater Escape Training (H.U.E.T) & Emergency Breathing Systems (EBS).
- SLS Bronze Medallion & Certificate II in Public Safety (Aquatic Rescue).
- NVIS qualified with Night Operation Experience.
- Experience with FLIR imagery systems.
Skills/Experience:
- Possess a current class 1 driver's license.
- Minimum age of 18 years at the time of selection.
- At least 500 hours of aircrew experience.
- Pass required physical fitness assessments.
- Strong communication, planning, and organizational skills.
- Excellent critical thinking abilities.
- Familiarity with relevant IT systems.
- Ability to multitask and prioritize in a complex, urgent environment.
