The Construction Lead for NHM & HM drives construction planning and execution for the SCM27 shutdown, ensuring constructability is embedded in design and that construction activities are performed safely and efficiently. Provides leadership to site & contractor teams to deliver safe, efficient, and effective construction outcomes that meet the approved scope and shutdown objectives. Coaches and develops teams to deliver high performance, including the implementation of BHP Operating Systems.

Key Accountabilities

- Scope Leadership & Planning: Plans (SPS/DPS), leads and manages the construction of a clearly defined area of scope (including shutdowns and pre-commitments) in compliance with internal and external governance processes and Global Standard performance requirements. Ensures safe delivery within approved quality, schedule, cost, and business case KPIs.

- Execution Strategy & Methodologies: Coordinates and implements construction strategies, methodologies, systems, and execution plans that minimise waste, preserve value, and reflect operational best practices. Explores best-fit solutions, takes ownership of decisions, and manages value impacts. Drives construction interfaces between Contractors, General Services, Completions, and Commissioning Teams.

- Operational Integration: Collaborates closely with operational personnel to ensure construction plans reflect site constraints, production priorities, and shutdown sequencing. Leverages operational insights to optimise constructability and minimise disruption.

- Risk & Constructability Management: Identifies, assesses, and manages construction risks and constructability with input from operational teams. Communicates risks to stakeholders and makes risk-informed decisions using BHP’s risk management framework to support safe and productive outcomes.

- Schedule Optimisation & Monitoring: Defines construction objectives and schedules, identifies critical path activities, and optimises sequencing. Monitors construction plans and drives continuous improvement initiatives to enhance execution and minimise production impacts.

- Quality Assurance: Executes quality management plans and oversees site-based quality control activities to meet project and shutdown quality objectives.

- Compliance & Readiness: Monitors HSS and Environmental compliance and applies appropriate standards to ensure effective construction. Coordinates timely delivery of Owner obligations such as access, accommodation, permits, utilities, free‑issue equipment, and temporary facilities to support readiness.

- Value Delivery & Issue Management: Makes best‑value decisions to advance construction progress while minimising delays and setbacks. Manages deviations from execution plans with operational input to ensure rapid mitigation and resolution.

- Stakeholder Engagement: Builds strong relationships with stakeholders, including operational teams, through timely communication and alignment of needs, priorities, and availability. Ensures efficient delivery with zero rework and plans tie‑ins, testing, start‑up, and ramp‑up to minimise operational impacts.

- Team Leadership & Talent Development: Manages team performance and identifies talent and capability for input into broader talent planning initiatives.

- Functional Collaboration: Coordinates with functional teams to integrate inputs and deliver the project’s scope, quality, cost, and schedule requirements. Ensures operational and functional alignment throughout construction.

- Continuous Improvement & Learning Culture: Leads improvement initiatives and fosters a learning environment. Share lessons learned, best practices, and bright spots across teams to drive continuous improvement.

- Governance Alignment: Ensures the project is delivered in alignment with BOS Practices and other internal governance frameworks.

- You will have held project leadership roles either in the resource or heavy industry sector and can demonstrate how you have utilised your technical and project management skills to lead teams through engineering activities, projects, standards, and governance to positively and safely impact a business.

- Deep understanding of the project lifecycle, value levers and have proven success in delivery projects of varying size and complexity.

- Proven leadership in resource or heavy industry projects, with a strong track record of integrating operational input into project delivery.

- Strong operational or frontline leadership experience, with the ability to confidently lead, mentor and coach team members as well as interfacing senior stakeholders.

- Proven leadership skills with the ability to motivate and inspire teams, resolve conflicts, and drive results in a fast‑paced environment.

- Demonstrated ability to solve complex problems with practical, site‑based solutions.

- Ability to solve problems at root cause, chasing gaps while actioning all opportunities available to achieve plan.

- Extensive experience in construction management, preferably in processing plant shutdowns or heavy mining industry.

- Strong knowledge of construction methodologies, construction systems, mining regulations, scheduling requirements and best practices.

- Project Management experience with a focus on shutdowns and brownfield execution.

Skills and qualifications:

- Tertiary Qualification in a technical discipline (engineering or construction preferred) or in a business / financial / commercial discipline OR Trade Certificate or Project Management Certificate

- Strong interpersonal and stakeholder engagement skills

- Unrelenting pursuit of quality and minimum viable solutions through shutdown planning & execution.

- Effective conflict resolution skills in mediating disputes and resolving conflicts

- Quick problem‑solving abilities to identify problems and develop effective solutions

- Deep understanding of compliance, safety, and operational requirements.

- Resilience and adaptability in dynamic shutdown environments.

- Ability to work collaboratively with operational and functional teams.
