In-House Legal Counsel

Overview

Allygroup is seeking senior legal or policy professionals to support government clients. Roles include high-level policy development, litigation and information law, and secondment opportunities across Australian public sector. All roles require Australian citizenship and security clearances where stated.

Locations and terms vary by position, with some contracts open to multiple locations and others Canberra-based. Occasional travel may be required. The descriptions below summarize key responsibilities and requirements across current opportunities.

Key Responsibilities

- Policy Development: Draft amendments to internal policies relating to conflicts of interest and the acceptance of gifts, benefits, and hospitality; ensure alignment with best practice and governance outcomes.
- Stakeholder Coordination: Lead cross-divisional working groups to facilitate policy development and secure endorsement from policy owners.
- Assurance Framework Design: Design assurance frameworks to evaluate compliance with conflict of interest requirements and assess effectiveness for employees and contractors.
- Governance and Reporting: Establish clear objectives, assurance activities, timelines, responsibilities, and governance and reporting mechanisms.
- Briefing Preparation: Prepare briefing materials to support endorsement and implementation of policy updates and the assurance framework.
- Litigation and Information Law (where applicable): Manage litigation and information rights matters, respond to court orders, FOI requests, and other regulatory processes as described per role.
- Client and Stakeholder Engagement: Work with senior stakeholders, government lawyers, paralegals, and external providers as required by the role.

About You (Qualifications and Experience)

- Minimum experience requirements vary by role (examples include 2, 3-5, or 6+ years post-admission) depending on seniority and specialisation (e.g., employment, privacy, FOI, information law, litigation).
- Strong experience in government or regulatory settings preferred.
- Excellent written and verbal communication, stakeholder engagement skills, and ability to manage competing priorities under tight deadlines.
- Security clearance: Baseline or higher where stated; NV1 or higher for certain roles; citizenship required.
