Where and how you can work

Our flagship campus is in Sydney. We also have a campus in Melbourne and co-working spaces in Brisbane, Perth and Adelaide. But you have choice in where and how you work. That means if you want to do your thing in the office (if you’re near one), at home or a bit of both, it’s up to you.

What you’d be doing in this role

As Canva scales change continues to be part of our DNA. But we like to think that’s all part of the fun. So this will give you the flavour of the type of things you’ll be working on when you start, but this will likely evolve.

At the moment, this role is focused on:

- Building robust, performant, and scalable frontend systems that allow people to use Canva offline

- Defining, designing, and developing a platform that empowers other teams to create high-quality products for users with limited network access

- Finding core user pain points and identifying practical solutions to address them

- Bridging the gap between “online” and “offline” by enabling a seamless multi-tiered network experience

You’ll probably be a match if:

- You are passionate about performance and know how to focus on what matters to the user

- You’re experienced with building scalable frontend solutions that serve a wide range of users

- You thrive on taking vague problems, identifying the most important ones, and delivering practical solutions

- You have a good understanding of the entire stack, with a focus on frontend and browsers

- (Bonus) You understand how to leverage browser Cache APIs and/or Service Workers to build progressive web apps (PWAs)

About the Team

Offline Platform is part of Web Platform - building the foundations for frontend developers across Canva. A key part of what makes Canva a product loved by millions is its performance.
From that lense, we are aiming to enable people across the world to use Canva in various network conditions.

Our team focuses on one of the more challenging ones - being completely Offline.

An offline product for Canva will support our users in creating, editing, viewing and downloading their designs anywhere, anytime, with or without a reliable internet connection.
The Offline team is responsible for building the tooling and architecture necessary to empower the entire product to work Offline.

About the Role

We are looking for engineers with an interest in building an alternative experience to the product we have by pushing for two work streams: building and improving core Offline user experiences, and designing & developing the infrastructure necessary to empower other product teams to build offline features easily.

The Offline team is a product team with a platform mindset, so your role is to balance building the Offline platform, with dogfooding our tooling and platform work by building offline features for the core Canva user experience, such as viewing and creating designs.

As a senior software engineer in the Offline team you will be collaborating with engineers from many different parts of the company to build the whole offline experience in stages, implementing and improving user flows one‑by‑one, from an MVP to a fully fledged experience for the millions of Canva users in the world.
