Council of the City of Sydney, Australia Wagec Women’s Refuge Full time

We’re seeking an experienced Family Specialist to work with women and children in our innovative From Now program.

About the Role

WAGEC’s From Now program works with women and children as they transition out of the corrections system, providing accommodation and therapeutic programmes in partnership with justice, child‑protection and housing systems. The program offers safe accommodation for pregnant women and/or women with their children for 3‑6 months, during which they receive daily, intensive therapeutic support to address immediate needs and long‑term goals. Programs focus on living and parenting skills to develop tools for successful reconnection with family and communities.

The Family Specialist delivers trauma‑informed, family‑centred support to women and their children, strengthening family resilience and disrupting cycles of trauma. Working on‑site and in community‑based settings, the role provides tailored case‑management, group and educational programmes, and after‑hours on‑call support.

This is a part‑time role (3 days per week / 0.6 FTE) based in Riverwood on an initial 2‑year contract, with the view to becoming permanent.

Responsibilities

- Deliver trauma‑informed, strengths‑based case management for women and families in supported accommodation and in correctional facilities.

- Contribute to and facilitate therapeutic groups and programmes that support families, safe parenting, family reunion and trauma‑informed care.

- Support the Program Lead with the implementation of the programme’s policies, procedures and evaluations.

- Build relationships with external stakeholders and agencies to support positive client outcomes.

- Participate in an after‑hours on‑call rotating roster.

- Contribute to WAGEC’s caring and supportive culture, driving commitment to our social impact.

About You

- At least 3 years of professional experience in child, youth and/or family services.

- Solid skills in providing trauma‑informed support to women and children who have experienced domestic violence, incarceration or other complex needs.

- Experience working with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander women and children and/or culturally diverse communities in a human‑services setting.

- Experience facilitating training, educational programmes or groups with adults and children.

- Sound experience in child protection, mandatory reporting, risk assessments and safety planning.

- Strong communication skills, able to adapt practice from a trauma‑informed perspective and maintain professional boundaries.

- Qualifications in Social Work, Community Work, Psychology or Counselling, or equivalence through experience.

- Lived experience of incarceration, or working with women in justice systems, will be highly regarded.
