Austin Health is the major provider of tertiary health services, health professional education and research across three campuses in the north-east of Melbourne and statewide. We have a highly engaged, diverse and collaborative workforce that is unified by our goal to help people live healthy and fulfilled lives.

About the Business Intelligence Unit

We are seeking a mid-level data scientist or data analyst with proven experience delivering predictive models into production. Recent graduates will not be considered.

Familiarity with outpatient clinical workflows, medical terminologies, and healthcare datasets would be regarded favourably. The role will involve designing and conducting statistical analyses to model outpatient waiting times. We are also looking to recruit a data engineer to support the data pipeline build and assist this role with feature engineering and deploying models into production.

This role is jointly funded by the Northeast Melbourne Health Service Partnership and the Eastern Melbourne Public Health Network. The goal is to deliver a predictive algorithm and dashboard for expected wait times on relevant specialist clinic waiting lists.

A regular day will see you:

- Analysing specialist clinic activity and waiting list data
- Working with a data engineer to extract and build feature engineering
- Testing and tuning predictive models (machine learning or stock and flow for example)
- Preparing summary slides to show stakeholders the progress
- Developing summary dashboards to show predicted wait times across hospitals and specialties.

About you

As the Data Scientist, you will be someone who has excellent communication skills, with a strong commitment to excellence in patient care. You’ll bring energy and drive to your work, and have a keen interest in developing your skillset.

To be successful in this role you’ll bring with you:

- Strong skills in predictive modelling, clustering, natural language processing (NLP), and machine learning.
- Expertise in Python and R, with experience using libraries such as TensorFlow, PyTorch, Scikit-learn, Pandas, and NumPy.
- Experience deploying predictive models into production.
- Experience with SQL and large-scale structured and unstructured data.

Working at Austin Health means enjoying a strong sense of purpose, engaging in meaningful work every day. Our people also receive a variety of rewarding benefits, including:

- Greater take-home pay through generous salary packaging, for living expenses, meals, and holiday accommodation.
- A suite of wellness initiatives designed to support you, including discounted fitness memberships and special offers on health insurance, and a comprehensive wellbeing program.
- Onsite childcare at Austin Hospital, easy access via public transport and car parking options.
- Mentoring and career development opportunities.
