PhD Fellowship in Applied Information Technology: AI Creative Solutions in Health
Norway Kristiania University of Applied Sciences
Oslo
Kristiania University of Applied Sciences offers study programs in management, organization, marketing, communication, computer science, information technology, health sciences, innovation and creative arts. Kristiania University of Applied Sciences is Norway’s largest independent comprehensive university college with its 24,000 students and a large education offering in Oslo, Bergen and online. Our mission is to strongly contribute to the country’s social and economic development through problem‑driven and applied knowledge development and dissemination, in close cooperation with society at large.
The School of Arts, Design and Media
The School of Arts, Design and Media is Norway’s largest higher education environment for creative and art‑related disciplines, with more than 1,700 students and 130 full‑time academic positions. The school offers education and research across film and television production, music and sound, performing and written arts, communication, design and computer arts. Research and teaching are closely connected to professional working environments and the creative industries, linking artistic practice with technological innovation and international collaboration.
About the position
Kristiania University of Applied Sciences is offering a fully funded PhD fellowship in Applied Information Technology. The successful applicant will be included in a team of researchers with ambitious plans to further develop research and pedagogical activities related to Applied Information Technology at the university.
The position is part of the MishMash Centre for AI and Creativity, a national research centre funded by the Research Council of Norway (2025–2030), and will contribute to advancing research at the intersection of creative AI, artistic innovation, and applications in health technologies for human well‑being.
The chosen candidate will be working with experts from both the School of Arts, Design and Media and the School of Economics, Innovation, and Technology in a strongly interdisciplinary environment.
The PhD project should aim to investigate how artificial intelligence and creative technologies can complement each other to design and build support solutions in human health, empathy, and well‑being.
The specific project, to be developed with the selected applicant, will focus on interactive AI systems, including exploration of evolutionary approaches, creative media tools, immersive environments, and adaptive sound or image systems. Central questions include how AI can enhance emotional connection, facilitate inclusive participation, and support care‑oriented human–machine interaction without reproducing bias or automation of empathy. As a main goal, the project’s outcome will provide new insights of importance in therapeutic, educational, or assistive contexts.
Moreover, the project may involve developing or testing creative AI prototypes in collaboration with health institutions, applying methods from human–computer interaction, affective computing, or creative technology design. Ethical and accessibility concerns will be central, ensuring that AI systems designed for health and well‑being promote trust, inclusion, and respect for human agency.
- Design and evaluate creative AI‑based interactive systems aimed at improving well‑being, accessibility, or emotional communication; use and develop generative AI‑based solutions for creative health interventions (e.g., art‑, sound‑, or game‑based approaches)
- Analyse human–AI interaction patterns with emphasis on empathy, attention, and affective response
- Implement ethical and inclusive design methods for responsible AI in health and creative practices, with a particular focus on developing and applying approaches in Trustworthy AI and examining potential trade‑offs among different trustworthiness dimensions, such as performance, uncertainty, explainability (XAI), and fairness (bias)
- Disseminate findings through interdisciplinary conferences and journals, and collaborate with research and health‑sector partners
The candidate will join a cross‑disciplinary supervisory team and will collaborate with national and international partners in the MishMash network.

The master’s thesis must be a minimum of 30 ECTS or equivalent. The relevance of the subject areas is dependent on the type of project proposed by the candidate
- Analytical and technical skills relevant to applied information technology, particularly in AI, machine learning, or human–computer interaction
- Experience with programming and digital tools used in AI or interactive system development (e.g., Python, Unity, Unreal, Max/MSP, or similar)
- Some creative or artistic competence, such as experience in digital art, game design, creative coding, or interactive media production
- Understanding of user‑centred or participatory design methods, with an interest in applying them to health, accessibility, or well‑being contexts
- Relevance to MishMash’s aims and objectives
- Proficiency in both written and spoken English (interviews and all communication will be in English)
In line with the objectives of the MishMash Centre for AI and Creativity, candidates should demonstrate interest in interdisciplinary collaboration across technology, arts, and design, and an ability to engage in cross‑institutional research networks.

- Curiosity and a strong motivation to carry out independent interdisciplinary research
- Good communication and cooperation skills
