LOCATION: Inner-city Melbourne, Victoria

TYPE OF WORK: 100% Small Animal

HOURS: Full Time or Part Time

AFTER HOURS: None

SALARY: Commensurate with experience

JOB NO: 222,927LW

- No overnight shifts
- Large, supportive emergency team
- State-of-the-art hospital

Are you an experienced vet nurse with a passion for emergency and critical care? This position at a large, purpose-built hospital in central Melbourne offers a rewarding and hands-on role in a busy ECC and urgent care team.

You’ll work alongside a skilled and dedicated group of ECC vets and nurses in a well-equipped facility, providing vital clinical care to patients presenting with a wide range of urgent and emergency needs. The role includes daytime and early evening shifts, with some weekend work required. For those interested in part-time hours, there are short five-hour shifts available.

The practice is seeking a veterinary nurse who is confident, compassionate and thrives in a fast-paced emergency environment. This role is ideal for someone who takes pride in delivering exceptional patient care while working collaboratively within a close-knit team. A genuine commitment to supporting both pets and their owners is essential.

To excel in this position, you’ll bring solid experience in emergency and critical care. You’ll hold a recognised veterinary nursing qualification, such as a Certificate IV in Veterinary Nursing or Bachelor of Veterinary Nursing and have at least four years of experience in an animal hospital or similar ECC setting. Strong skills in patient triage and the ability to assess and escalate cases appropriately are vital, as is the capability to perform CPR in line with RECOVER guidelines.

Your background will include extensive experience monitoring patients under anaesthesia for both routine and emergency procedures, as well as anaesthesia of critical cases like FLUTD cats and patients requiring enterectomy or enterotomy. Proficiency with advanced monitoring techniques, including capnography and both doppler and oscillometric blood pressure, is required.

The employers value emotional intelligence and self-awareness, along with clear communication skills and the ability to work well under pressure. A positive, team-focused attitude and a genuine passion for providing community-centred veterinary care will help you thrive in this role.

On offer for the successful candidate:

– Diverse caseloads across A&E and ICU

– Exposure to a wide range of clinical presentations

– Support from a highly skilled and collaborative team

– CPD allowance and professional development support

– Onsite parking

– Inclusive and supportive team culture

– Access to 6 free EAP sessions for all staff

– Wellbeing support including Grief Counselling for clients

– Generous staff discounts on veterinary care, products and pet insurance

– Pet-friendly workplace policies

The hospital is extremely well equipped, with CT, fluoroscopy, ultrasound, x-ray, ECG, tonopen IOP, cryopen, doppler and advanced monitoring tools.

Located just north of Melbourne’s CBD, North Melbourne offers a vibrant inner-city lifestyle with leafy streets, a strong sense of community, excellent transport, and access to some of the city’s best food, arts and cultural offerings.
