Location: Melbourne CBD / Hybrid (2–3 days onsite)

Contract Duration: 3 months

Classification: VPS Equivalent (depending on experience)

About the Role

The client is seeking an experienced Security Engineer to support ongoing cybersecurity initiatives across the department’s digital infrastructure. This short-term engagement will focus on strengthening system security, improving incident response capabilities, and ensuring alignment with the Victorian Government Cyber Security Strategy.

You’ll work within a collaborative ICT Security team, providing hands‑on technical expertise and guidance across projects, networks, and cloud environments to maintain a secure and resilient technology landscape.

Key Responsibilities

- Support the implementation and maintenance of security controls across on‑premises and cloud environments (Microsoft Azure, M365).

- Conduct vulnerability assessments, security audits, and remediation planning.

- Respond to and manage cybersecurity incidents, ensuring timely escalation and resolution.

- Collaborate with ICT operations, network, and application teams to embed best‑practice security measures.

- Support the delivery of security improvement projects and assist in risk assessments and compliance reviews.

- Contribute to the development and maintenance of security documentation, including policies, procedures, and technical standards.

Key Selection Criteria

- Proven experience as a Security Engineer or similar role within complex enterprise or government environments.

- Strong understanding of cloud security (Azure, Microsoft 365, Intune) and network security principles.

- Hands‑on experience with security tools such as SIEM, EDR, vulnerability scanners, and firewalls.

- Sound knowledge of information security frameworks and standards (e.g., ISO 27001, Essential Eight, NIST).

- Demonstrated ability to identify, analyse, and resolve technical security issues.

- Excellent communication and stakeholder engagement skills, with the ability to explain technical issues in clear business terms.

Desirable Qualifications

- Tertiary qualification in Information Security, Computer Science, or a related discipline.

- Relevant industry certifications (e.g., CISSP, CISM, Microsoft Security, CompTIA Security+, CEH).

- Previous experience working within Victorian or Federal Government departments.
