THE OPPORTUNITY

The Research Assistant will be working under the supervision of A/Prof Elissa Deenick and Prof Robert Brink whose labs are part of the Precision Immunology and Immune Biotherapies Research Programs at Garvan. The successful candidate will work on multiple projects with a major focus on producing and working with immunologically humanised mice to investigate investigating immune disease, antibody production and testing new biotherapies.

Salary: Up to $95,000 + 14% superannuation + salary packaging (depending on experience)

Employment Type: 3 year fixed term contract

WHAT YOU WILL DO

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

- Conduct experiments such as tissue culture, flow cytometry, maintenance and monitoring of mouse colonies and routine assays

- Record experimental procedures and results

- Maintain databases

- Regularly attend lab meetings

- Contribute to team and Garvan research projects

- Be involved in lab responsibilities such as:

- Store duties, wash-up and cleaning of shared rooms

- Stock control: monitoring and ordering consumables under supervision

- Responsible for imparting knowledge, skills and expertise to others

General responsibilities include (applicable to all levels):

- All staff are required to comply with Garvan's workplace polices (as amended from time to time) and especially Garvan's Work Health & Safety (WHS) Policy, including working in accordance with the WHS management system at all times, as safety is Garvan's number one priority.

ABOUT YOU

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED

Essential

- Bachelors' Degree in Science or Medicine (with Honours), preferably in immunology or a related field

- Experience with multiparameter flow cytometry and Flowjo

- Experience working with mouse models including injections and monitoring

- Experience with tissue culture

- High level of accuracy and attention to detail

Desirable

- Experience with handling human blood samples

- Experience with magnetic bead cell separations

- Experience with molecular techniques e.g. RNA prep, PCR, recombinant protein production

Research Assistants within the Garvan are expected to possess the following attributes:
