We are looking for a dedicated Aboriginal Health Worker to join the AWAHS team and make a meaningful impact on the lives of Aboriginal children and their parents.

About the Role:

As an Aboriginal Health Worker (AHW), you will assist the Maternal & Child Health Nurses in establishing and advocating for a culturally appropriate health service targeting Aboriginal children (0-5 years) and their families. This role is a key part of the Aboriginal Maternal and Child Health Initiative (AMCHI) in Victoria, aiming to close the health gap for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities.

Key Responsibilities:

- Work closely with the Albury Wodonga Aboriginal community to implement the AMCHI program
- Advocate and promote infant and child physical, emotional, and social health through assessment, consultation, group work, education, supportive counselling, and referrals
- Support families with practical needs such as:

- Registering children for birth certificates, Medicare, and Centrelink
- Assisting with childcare and preschool enrolments
- Transitioning to parenthood support
- Connecting families with playgroups, baby groups, and women's groups

- Assist families in crisis with household essentials such as food, formula, and baby supplies
- Provide timely referrals to internal and external support services, including allied health, housing, parenting support, and early education
- Support the multi-disciplinary team in delivering culturally appropriate care for Aboriginal families, including participation in Safe Start and Kids team meetings at AWAHS
- Develop and implement culturally appropriate health promotion strategies, including:

- Breastfeeding education and support
- Safe sleep education
- Smoking cessation promotion
- Encouraging developmental play and communication activities for children

- Facilitate access to immunisation programs and ensure follow-ups for overdue immunisations
- Conduct home visits with Maternal & Child Health Nurses and provide ongoing support to families with complex needs
- Assist with data collection and reporting to ensure service improvement and accountability

About You:

To be successful in this role, you will have:

- A strong understanding of Aboriginal culture and a commitment to improving health outcomes for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander families
- Experience working with Aboriginal communities and families in a health or social services setting
- Excellent communication and advocacy skills to support families in accessing essential services
- The ability to work collaboratively within a multi-disciplinary team
- Strong organisational skills and the ability to manage multiple tasks effectively
- A current driver's licence and ability to undertake home visits as required
