We are looking for a Peer Worker to join our team in the Muswellbrook to cover a period of six months maternity relief. The role of this Peer Worker is to be a part of the Muswellbrook Medicare Mental Health Service, a multidisciplinary team based in Muswellbrook with outreach services to Singleton and Scone.

Job Description

This position offers people with a lived experience of mental illness and/or AOD dependency a unique opportunity to provide peer support and work alongside our Support Navigators, Counsellors and Clinical Practitioners.

The Peer Worker position gives you an opportunity to:

help us find new ways to meet service gaps in mental health and AOD in the Upper Hunter.

enhance your brief intervention and assessment skills in a work culture that supports learning and development

be a part of a multidisciplinary team in providing in evidence-based best practice and making a difference in the lives of people impacted by mental illness and AOD use.

The Medicare Mental Health Peer Worker position offers flexible hours from Monday to Sunday and requires the ability to work shifts. The Peer Worker is required to work some general business hours. This position will involve regional travel across the Upper Hunter and the ability to work across our sites.

The successful candidate will have:

A Lived Experience of mental health/AOD

Certificate IV in AOD, Mental Health or Peer Work, or Diploma Community Services.

Ability to use personal lived experience of mental illness and/or AOD use to positively support others on their recovery journey and willingness to share aspects of personal recovery experience. This provides a role model for recovery, support and understanding for other consumers.

Extensive local knowledge of mental health and AOD services and skills in liaising, negotiating and advocating for the people we work with.

At least 2 years demonstrated experience in AOD and mental health

Demonstrated understanding of the consumer movement and able to effectively challenge assumptions and promote recovery-oriented principles.

Developed facilitation and coaching skills to support group programs for individuals, staff and families.

Well-developed organisational, time management and administrative skills with the ability to plan, prioritise and meet deadlines

Demonstrated experience in maintaining professional boundaries while engaging in person-centred work
