About One Door
One Door Mental Health has joined the Mind Australia Group, creating one of the largest community‑managed mental health networks in the country. One Door Mental Health is a pioneering, purpose‑driven service provider dedicated to supporting individuals living with mental illness, along with their families and carers. With over 30 years of experience, our innovative services and community‑driven approach create a safe and supportive environment.
About the Service
One Door Mental Health is establishing Distress Brief Support Short‑Term Support Team (DBS STST) in Tamworth as a pilot program, designed as a trial short‑term service to test and refine an early‑intervention, recovery‑oriented response to distress. The service is available to adults aged 18 years and over and aims to complement existing clinical and community services by providing timely, person‑centred support during periods of heightened distress.
About the role
We are seeking a collaborative and insightful Peer Practitioner for a fixed‑term, full‑time or part‑time opportunity in Tamworth. You will act as a champion of co‑design and lead co‑production practices, in practical ways always placing the relationship and service user at the centre of their journey. This is done through working with a person to understand and identify their story, and to identify how they would like to move towards what is possible in their lives by focusing on relational care.
Key responsibilities
- Utilise the learning from lived/living experience of mental health challenges and/or alcohol and drug challenges.
- Provide an alternative to traditional mental health responses through the practice of mutuality.
- Full‑time & part‑time opportunities available; contract until 30 June 2027; Tamworth location.
- Utilise effective and appropriate sharing of learnings from personal recovery stories.
- Provide peer‑based support to people living with mental health concerns by building trust through shared experiences, promoting a hopeful outlook, and offering consistent, empathetic engagement.
- Deliver outreach‑based peer support, including visiting clients in community settings and other services, to support engagement, reduce barriers to access, and assist clients to connect with appropriate supports.
- Forge strong links with the DBS STST and community partners to better enable a smooth transition for people we support.
- Contribute to a culturally responsive workforce and service environment for staff, service users, family/carers and volunteers from all cultures, genders, sexualities, bodies, abilities, spiritualities, ages and backgrounds.
Your Benefits
- Transform Lives: Play a vital role in empowering individuals, helping them achieve their goals and improve their quality of life.
- Competitive Salary Packaging: Maximize your take‑home pay by salary packaging up to $15,900.
- Fitness Passport: Take advantage of our discounted workplace health and fitness program, offering you and your family access to a wide range of gyms, pools and fitness centres at a fraction of the regular cost. For 50% less than a typical gym membership, enjoy unlimited visits and stay motivated to maintain your health and well‑being.
- Leave Perks: Enjoy leave perks including birthday leave, study leave and an extra annual picnic day leave
What you’ll bring
- Tertiary qualifications (minimum Certificate IV) are required in Mental Health, Peer Work, Alcohol and Other Drugs (AOD) or other health‑related field as designated by ODMH.
- Completion of Intentional Peer Support Core and/or Advanced Training is desirable but not required.
- Has a lived/living experience of mental distress and recovery and understanding of, and ability and willingness to contribute this lived expertise in working towards greater organisational impact.
- Experience or ability to acquire skills in understanding needs and working collaboratively to plan wellbeing supports using evidence‑informed approaches and tools, for example in challenging situations.
