Research Nurse

The Research Nurse/Trials Practitioner will be a member of the Cambridge Cancer Trials Team working in the Haematology trials team. The post-holder will work closely with the health care teams associated with the multidisciplinary team, primarily in Multiple Myeloma. This will include the CNS team as well as the Haematology consultants.

The key responsibilities are to help to identify patients eligible for clinical trials and attending a weekly MDT meeting; provide information and support for patients entering clinical trials; co-ordinate trial patient treatment, assessment, follow-up and data collection according to specific clinical trial protocols. This will include close liaison with relevant staff in respective departments including the Research Facilities, Haematology Day Unit, Radiotherapy, Pharmacy, Radiology, Outpatients and the Haematology/Transplant ward teams, Research & Development and Ethics departments.

Responsibilities

- The post holder is responsible for the provision of high quality, patient focused clinical research for the Haematology Trials Team.

- Responsible for identifying eligible clinical research participants, provision of information and support to patients/participants, study recruitment and consent, co-ordination of study treatment/ interventions, assessing, developing and implementing specialist nursing care and data collection according to study protocols in accordance with ICH Good Clinical Practice, EU Clinical Trials legislation and the NHS research governance framework.

- Responsible for providing specialist advice and support to Haematology Trials patients and liaising with other staff.

- The Portfolio comprises Multiple Myeloma, Acute Myeloblastic Leukaemia and Acute Lymphoblastic Leukaemia, Bone Marrow Transplant, Myelodysplastic Disorder and Myeloproliferative Neoplasm, Non-Hodgkin's Lymphoma and Hodgkin's Lymphoma, and Chronic Lymphocytic Leukaemia.

Person Specification

Qualifications

- Evidence of continuous professional development
- Post registration qualification in speciality or willingness to complete
- Degree
- Research Module

Experience

- Relevant clinical experience at Band 5 or above
- Experience of formal/informal teaching
- Supervision of junior staff
- Experience of working within multi-disciplinary teams
- Experience of working in a clinical research environment e.g. Clinical Trials, participant recruitment and interviewing
- Experience of co-ordinating REC and HRA submissions

Knowledge

- Knowledge of clinical research infrastructure in the UK and of research related legislation & regulation
- Understand the structure, role & functions of RECs and R&D departments
- Understanding of the requirements of ICH Good Clinical Practice; possess current GCP Certificate
- Knowledge of the role of the clinical research nurse; understanding the issues/process of gaining informed consent
- Basic knowledge of research methods
- Capable of writing reports and of presenting research related information to a wide audience
- Competent in research/database PC packages
