Principal Structural Engineer

Overview

Principal Structural Engineer - Water/Wastewater – Sydney. The Water Division is experiencing significant growth, presenting the opportunity for a Principal Structural Engineer based in the Sydney team within the West Region Delivery Team for Sydney Water. The role provides technical expertise during project delivery and leads technical teams to develop and deliver the most appropriate technical solution for key water projects.

Responsibilities

- Lead and supervise structural consulting work, including client management, scoping/securing projects, and project management.
- Undertake and/or supervise the full range of structural analyses and designs undertaken by Stantec.
- Provide technical leadership in all aspects of structural engineering and contribute to the development of business goals and client relationships.
- Deliver technical capabilities in water/wastewater, civil and building structures across projects.
- Plan, program, and coordinate multidisciplinary projects as Project Structural Lead to deliver outputs on budget, on time, and to quality standards.
- Provide design quality aligned with client brief, risk appetite, drivers and professional obligations.
- Mentor junior team members and contribute to succession planning and technical capability growth.
- Prepare sketches and markups for drafting; review drawings for accuracy and risk in design and construction.
- Maintain relevant technical and professional qualifications; demonstrate leadership in project management and structural engineering activities.
- Establish and advance technical procedures, design processes and quality assurance for the structural engineering team.

Client Relationships

- Develop strong client relationships by delivering high levels of service and understanding business drivers.
- Collaborate with clients to ensure requirements are met and that engagement is open with no delivery surprises.
- Develop new client relationships to expand market share within the Water Business Centre.

Business Development

- Prepare expressions of interest, proposals and marketing initiatives.
- Provide leadership on business development actions with other relevant Stantec staff.
- Perform work in line with Stantec Core Values and Quality Procedures.

Leadership

- Lead multidisciplinary projects as the lead structural engineer.
- Mentor junior structural staff and support professional development through engagement with industry bodies.
- Support Group Leaders and Project Managers within Stantec.

Qualifications

- Tertiary qualification in a relevant engineering field.
- Chartered Engineer or working towards chartership.
- 8 years of experience in an engineering consultancy.
- Leadership abilities including managing subcontractors and multidisciplinary teams.
- Knowledge of structural engineering, dams/hydro and the delivery environment.
- Strong problem solving and negotiation skills to resolve disputes.
- Understanding of D&C or alternative delivery projects.
- Solid report writing with the ability to tell a compelling story.
- Proficient in Project Management Tools, MS Project, Power BI.
- Previous experience working with Sydney Water is desirable.
