Overview
A Disability Support Worker at Allambi Care supports participants to go beyond just managing their disability, and assists them to move toward living connected and fulfilling lives. You’ll follow our Needs-Based Restorative Framework, giving person-centred support that respects participants’ voices, choices and values. Your role is all about creating safe, empowering environments where people can build independence, strengthen relationships, and thrive day to day. Whether you are walking alongside participants as they build life skills, enhance social connections or endeavour to achieve personal goals, every interaction counts. You will strive to build trusting relationships and consistency for the participants you support by leading with dignity and compassion in every aspect of your support.
How we support participants
We run two main programs:
- Community participation — Supports children and adults living in the community, plus young people in out-of-home care. This program uses both Core and Capacity Building funding.
- Home & living — Supports adults living in Supported Independent Living (SIL) or Individualised Living Option (ILO) arrangements, with 6–24 hours of support per day.
Support needs can vary, so you might be working overnights, weekends, or holidays depending on what participants need.
Some of the ways you’ll support participants:
- Daily personal support — Help with showering, grooming, mobility, and eating
- Assisting in maintaining medication through prompting and supervision
- Support with continence care & hygiene
- Building living skills — Supporting participants to plan & prepare meals, or complete grocery shopping.
- Assisting with managing money and budgeting.
- Helping with cleaning, laundry and home maintenance
- Encouraging problem solving and growing independence to build decision making capacity
- Support with navigating systems, organising and attending appointments.
- Helping participants use public transport safely and independently
- Community & social participation — Support to participate in activities or hobbies within the community.
- Encouraging and supporting social interaction and connections.
- Support to attend social events, clubs, or interest groups
- Accessing volunteering, employment, or education opportunities
- Communication & supporting rights — Supporting participants to express their needs, choices, and goals; assisting with understanding rights and navigating services; supporting access to interpreters, communication aids, or accessible information.
- Behaviour support — Implementing positive behaviour support plans and strategies; assisting participants with emotional regulation and understanding triggers; using proactive and non-restrictive strategies to ensure safety and wellbeing.
What’s the team like?
Our team is tight-knit and supportive. People stay because they love the work and the people they work with. Like a family, everyone brings different experiences and perspectives but we all share a passion for making a real difference in people’s lives. The team is collaborative, sharing knowledge and tips to help each other provide the best support possible for participants.
How will Allambi Care support me in this role?
You’ll start with a two-day paid induction to get you up to speed. This covers everything from our policies and procedures to frameworks, to help give you the confidence to make informed decisions while on shift.
We structure our teams so you’ll always have support. Our Oncall Team is available after hours, whether you need a quick debrief, advice, or more hands-on guidance.
We also work hard to give consistent shifts, so you can build trust and really connect with the people you support. The goal is for you to make a lasting impact, and feel confident and supported doing it.
Who are we looking for?
We want people who align with our mission and values, and will:
- Support individual choice and control and respect participant’s goals and values.
- See participants as individuals and focus on strength and preferences.
- Listen without judgment, adapt to different communication styles and make space for participants to express themselves.
- Follow through on commitments, maintain boundaries, and ask for help when needed.
- Approach support with care, respect, and consent.
- Speak up if something doesn’t feel right and follow safety procedures.
- Welcome feedback, actively engage in training, and reflect on their practice to keep improving.
