After becoming a PCO, you may be able to progress to a supervising police custody officer (SPCO) role.
A career as an SPCO gives you an opportunity to be a leader in the custody area.
Supervising police custody officer roles
SPCOs oversee and coordinate the day-to-day operations of a team of PCOs.
You will be a valued member of the local police team. You will also play a crucial role in the management and welfare of persons in custody.
As part of this role, you will:
- supervise and coordinate the day-to-day operations of a team of PCOs
- monitor the quality PCO services
- oversee the health, wellbeing, safety and supervision of persons in custody
- carry out prisoner management functions for more complex prisoners
- monitor, supervise and undertake administrative and personnel functions
- provide leadership, mentoring, performance management and coordination of training activities
- give evidence in court when required.
Supervising PCOs are stationed at 17 locations around Victoria.
Work hours
PCOs work across 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
SPCO shifts depend on local requirements.

To apply to become a supervising PCO you must be a current serving PCO and complete extra training.
Victorian Public Service employees can access the Jobs and Skills Exchange (JSE) website.
