Join our team as a Water Industry Worker 1 (SMBI Labourer)

Play a key role in maintaining Redland City’s water and wastewater networks, keeping hydrants, mains, and related infrastructure operating safely and efficiently. You’ll be based on the Southern Moreton Bay Islands – either a resident or willing to travel via ferry daily. This is a hands-on, field-based role with opportunities to progress to higher levels by developing your skills, gaining qualifications, and demonstrating leadership and technical expertise.

Your responsibilities will include:

- Assist with construction, maintenance, and repair of water and wastewater infrastructure
- Operate tools, small plant, and light equipment safely on site
- Perform confined space entry and traffic management tasks under supervision
- Help plan and schedule jobs, requisition materials, and maintain accurate records
- Use SCADA, telemetry, and GIS to monitor and support operations
- Follow all health, safety, and environmental procedures and report risks
- Work closely with the team to achieve tasks efficiently and safely
- Provide professional customer service and clear communication at all times

Skills and experience:

- Hands-on experience in water, wastewater, or construction-related maintenance
- Ability to operate and maintain tools, small plant, and light equipment
- Comfortable performing manual labour, confined space entry, and traffic management
- Basic administrative skills: job planning, scheduling, and record-keeping
- Familiarity with SCADA, telemetry, GIS, or willingness to learn
- Understanding of workplace health, safety, and environmental requirements
- Strong teamwork skills and willingness to learn on the job
- Clear communication and customer service focus

You’ll need to hold a current Class C driver’s licence

You’ll either have a Medium Rigid (MR) licence or be willing to obtain one

You’ll be happy to join our after-hours on-call roster, including weekends and public holidays

You’ll be physically capable and able to obtain a confined space entry certificate

You’ll bring a Construction White Card (Work Safely in the Construction Industry) or be willing to get one

You’ll be able to meet all mandatory licensing, regulatory requirements, and Council policies
