Salary and Benefits
Base salary range: $101,122 – $160,983 per annum, plus leave loading and employer superannuation contributions. The package is valued up to $182,461, with progression pathways through the NSW School Counselling Service PPF and SCAC.
Additional benefits include: school holiday leave, travel allowances, health and wellbeing benefits (e.g., Fitness Passport), indemnity insurance as a psychologist, and a dedicated induction and professional learning program.
Rural and Remote Incentive Package are available for eligible school counselling positions.

Overview
School counsellors are an essential part of the Department’s School Counselling Service. They provide counselling and psychological assessment of students, complementing and enhancing teachers’ efforts to strengthen student learning and wellbeing outcomes. The role offers unique challenges, professional development opportunities, and a real impact on the lives of children and young people.
As a counsellor, you will work across primary and high‑school aged students, collaborate with multidisciplinary teams, and engage with a diverse student community including Aboriginal, Torres Strait Islander, and language background students.
Key Responsibilities
- Deliver individual and group counselling and psychological assessment of students.
- Provide evidence‑based interventions and case formulation, including report writing.
- Collaborate with teachers, senior psychologists, school communities, and external agencies to improve learning and wellbeing outcomes.
- Participate in regular individual professional supervision and group peer supervision.
- Engage in continuous professional development and maintain registration with the Psychology Board of Australia.
- Support student families in understanding and managing learning and mental health needs.
Selection Criteria
- Experience in counselling using evidence‑based interventions, with a demonstrated understanding of the mental health needs of children and young people.
- Experience in the psychological assessment of children and young people, including case formulation and report writing.
- Demonstrated ability to collaborate with key stakeholders to improve the learning and wellbeing outcomes of children and young people, including students from diverse backgrounds and needs.
- Be a registered or provisionally registered psychologist, or eligible for registration with the Psychology Board of Australia.
Conditions
- Ability and willingness to travel between worksites.
- This position is under the Teachers award (Crown Employees – Teachers in Schools and Related Employees – Salaries and Conditions Award 2024).
- Eligibility to apply requires unconditional full approval to teach or start the application process concurrently with this teaching opportunity.
Start Date
This position will commence 03 Feb 2026.
