Job Description
Position objectives
This position contributes to the effective care of animals at the municipal pound, provides internal and external customer service and assists with administration to support the Community Safety team.
Key responsibility areas
- Provide best practice essential care to animals at Stawell pound, including (but not limited to) the tasks of:
- Daily feeding, watering, grooming and inspection of animals
- Daily cleaning of animal housing areas
- Administering of medication and treatment prescribed by a veterinarian
- Restraint of animals during assessment and treatment
- Be comfortable handling deceased animals
- Transportation of domestic animals
- Routine disinfection of animal housing areas and equipment
- Provision of daily environmental enrichment and exercise
- Provide timely and accurate information to the Team Leader Community Services on observed animal behaviour and condition, including suspicion of injury or disease
- Keep premises clean and tidy at all times
- Releasing animals to owners and receiving payments
- Stock management, ensuring that stock at the pound is stored correctly, regular checks on quantity of stock and report to Team Leader for advice
- Report to the Team Leader Community Services on issues regarding compliance with facility and Council policies and procedures
- Accurately input data and information on animals into the record keeping system
- Undertake other administrative duties as required
- Maintain appropriate office files and management systems and implement improved processes where required
- Perform, as directed, other duties that are within the limits of the incumbents’ skill, competence and training.
Desired Skills and Experience
Qualifications and experience
- Relevant experience and confidence in handling and caring for domestic animals, including dangerous dogs and feral cats.
- Relevant knowledge and skills in office and customer service gained through on-the-job training in keeping with position requirements.
- Valid drivers licence.
Selection criteria
- Previous animal handling experience and demonstrated strong/high level of interest in caring for animals.
- Demonstrated understanding of basic Occupational Health and Safety requirements relevant to an animal facility.
- A proven ability to plan and organise work to meet quality standards, unsupervised or as part of a team.
- Data entry skills and experience in using computer software.
