Toowoomba Grammar School is seeking a dedicated andexperiencedHead Greenkeeperto lead the maintenance,presentation, and continual improvement of the School’ssports fields, gardens, lawns, and outdoor facilities. A pivotalrole that oversees turf management, irrigation, and landscaping tomaintain a high standard that is safe, functional, and visuallyappealing, while providing leadership, guidance, and support to thegrounds team and fostering collaborative relationships withcontractors, senior management, teaching staff, and vendors.
Toowoomba Grammar School was founded in1875 and is a member school of the Great Public Schools Associationof Queensland (GPS). It is an independent non-denominationalday and boarding school for boys with a total enrolment of 1,200from Preparatory to Year 12. There are approximately 300boarders in the School coming predominantly from throughoutQueensland, Northern New South Wales and the NorthernTerritory. The School’s campus covers 20.5 hectares andis located one kilometre from the centre of Toowoomba.

About the Position
Reporting to the Director of Facilities, the Head Greenkeeperleads the delivery of grounds maintenance, sports field care, andlandscaping projects across the School. Key aspects includecurating turf wickets and high-quality sporting fields; marking andpreparing fields; collaborating with the TGS Sports Department andattending interdepartmental meetings; managing rostering andresource coverage for the cricket season; overseeing equipmenttraining, maintenance, and records in line with the TGS AssetManagement Policy; installing, maintaining, and programmingirrigation; implementing seasonal schedules; supportingsustainability and health, safety and environment requirements. Theposition may require a non-standard roster, including alternatingweekends or on-call duty for home games and large Schoolevents.
Selection Criteria:
You will be able to demonstrate your ability and commitmentto:
- Experience and Qualifications: Minimum of4 years’ experience as a Head Greenkeeper or similarrole; proven experience curating turf wickets and high-qualitysporting fields; Certificate III or IV in sports turfmanagement, horticulture or related field; Queensland DriverLicence; and current first aid qualifications or willingness toobtain.
- Technical Expertise in Greenkeeping:Demonstrated ability to curate and manage turf wickets andsports fields, including rugby, soccer and athletics surfacesis essential. Proficiency in operating groundskeepingequipment, irrigation systems, and expertise in plant care andpest control. Experience in planning and executing landscapingprojects and managing fertiliser and pest control programs isessential.
- Leadership and Management: Demonstratedability to provide management and direction to a grounds team,including staff rostering and resource coverage for the cricketseason. Proven experience in coordinating with internaldepartments, contractors, and vendors to deliver high-qualityoutcomes. Experience in budget forecasting and managingoperational budgets. The ability to manage equipmentmaintenance schedules and maintain accurate records inaccordance with the TGS Asset Management Policy
- Physical Capabilities: Proven capacity toperform physically demanding tasks in various weatherconditions, including walking, standing, bending, kneeling,lifting, and operating groundskeeping equipment. Ability tocarry out repetitive manual tasks while maintaining attentionto detail and safety standards. Endurance and resilience arekey to ensuring the upkeep of large outdoor areas andresponding promptly to maintenance needs across theSchool’s grounds.
- Health, Safety and EnvironmentAwareness: Demonstrated commitment to workplacehealth and safety, including compliance with regulations,maintaining clean and safe workshop areas, and proactivelyidentifying and addressing hazards. Strong understanding ofsustainability practices in groundskeeping, with the ability tointegrate environmental considerations into dailyoperations.
- Attention to Detail and Problem-SolvingSkills: Demonstrated ability to identify and resolveissues early to maintain high standards across all grounds andfacilities. Shows initiative and ownership of tasks, ensuringsports fields and landscaped areas are well-prepared, safe, andvisually appealing. Strong focus on quality, efficiency, andtimely completion of work.
