Position Information
The Evans Return to School Centre, a resource for Western Sydney schools, is an intervention for students who are on an extended suspension and have been identified by their school as being likely to benefit from a structured program to assist their successful return to schooling as soon as possible. The Centre is based on the school grounds of Evans High School, Blacktown.
It aims to assist students to reflect on, and understand their behaviour and its consequences. Students work towards developing a positive attitude towards schooling and improving their capacity to engage in activities that help them re-engage at school. The centre also aims to build the capacity of schools to deal successfully with disruptive students.
The Return to School Centre is staffed by a Head Teacher and a School Learning Support Officer. It has an enrolment capacity of up to six students at a time. The program caters for students from Western Sydney schools in the middle years of their schooling, from Years 5 to 10. Participation of students in other years may be negotiated based on student needs and placement availability.
The Head Teacher coordinating the program will aim to develop an individual plan for each student accepted into the program. Students will work with staff to participate in the centre’s social skills program and develop goals for a successful return to school. The goals set will depend on the specific issues facing the student. The Head Teacher will also work closely with census schools to support students' reintegration. There is also a close working relationship with students' families and carers.
Specific Selection Criteria
1. Proven capacity to apply evidence-based behaviour management, restorative justice, trauma-informed approaches and social–emotional learning to assist students in reflecting on their behaviour, taking responsibility, and re-engaging successfully in their schooling.
2. Demonstrated ability to design, coordinate and monitor personalised academic, social and behavioural plans for students, ensuring goals are measurable, regularly reviewed, and integrated with referring schools, mentor teachers, and Centre staff.
3. Evidence of strong interpersonal and communication skills to work productively with students, parents/carers, home schools, and external agencies. Proven ability to negotiate, resolve conflict, and build sustainable partnerships that support student success.
4. Demonstrated ability to manage day-to-day operations, lead and supervise staff, ensure compliance with Department of Education policies, and maintain a safe, supportive, and accountable learning environment for all students.
General Selection Criteria
1. Successful teaching experience with capacity to initiate improvement in teaching, learning and classroom practice
2. Knowledge of curriculum, assessment and student welfare with the ability to lead and design quality, inclusive teaching and learning programs
3. Educational leadership skills to build the capacity and manage the performance of individuals and teams
4. Well developed communication and interpersonal skills with the capacity to build relationships and engage students, staff and parents
5. Ability to plan and manage resources effectively and equitably to support teaching and learning
6. Knowledge of and commitment to the Department/'s Aboriginal education policy
