About the role

We are seeking a motivated Community Mental Health Practitioner eager to make a difference in young people’s lives for a casual opportunity to work alongside a caring team on a 24/7 rotating roster in the Woodridge area. You will provide intensive person‑centred, recovery‑oriented supports to young people to achieve their wellbeing goals, build capacity and daily living skills, strengthen social connections, enhance community networks and grow confidence to live independently in the community. You must be available for 24/7 shift work.

About the service

The Youth Step Up Step Down (YSUSD) is a short‑term residential mental health recovery service for young people aged 16–21, delivered in partnership with the local health service. It provides intensive individual and group support to promote resilience, social connection, self‑care and wellbeing. YSUSD offers a ‘step up’ alternative to hospital admission or a ‘step down’ pathway to support transition back to community living after hospitalisation. Each young person actively plans their recovery, with the YSUSD team engaging families, carers, friends and key supports.

Key responsibilities

- Support young people to return to their community, live independently and enjoy a meaningful life through a staged approach to recovery.

- Purposefully engage with young people using techniques including: Brief intervention, Motivational interviewing and coaching, Family inclusive practice, Trauma informed practice, Conflict resolution.

- Plan and deliver group programs that aid young people to build their skills and focus on recovery.

- Support family and carer roles through understanding their concerns and the provision of information, education and referrals.

- Collaborate with a range of services and the community to ensure a co‑ordinated, integrated response to people’s recovery goals.

- Contribute to the day to day operations of the residential service through undertaking a range of housekeeping duties.

What you’ll bring

- Tertiary qualifications (minimum Certificate IV) in Mental Health, Peer Work, Psychology, Social Work, Occupational Therapy or other health‑related field.

- Proven experience in working with people with mental health issues, complex needs and interacting with families and carers.

- Proven capability to implement therapeutic, recovery oriented frameworks and practices including risk mitigation, trauma informed care and family inclusive practice.

- Hold a current First Aid and CPR certificate.

- Ability to provide a record of Vaccination Preventable Diseases (or able to obtain vaccinations) against Measles, Mumps, Rubella, Chicken Pox, Whooping Cough, Hepatitis B or other diseases as required by our Partnership with QLD Health.
