Position Information
Banora Point High School is a comprehensive secondary school located in the Tweed Coast area. The school pays respect to the traditional custodians, the Nganduwal and Goodginburra people of the Minjungbul speaking clans of the Bundjalung nation. The student population is approximately 525, with 10.6 % identifying as Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander and less than 2 % coming from a non‑English speaking background.
The Itinerant Support Teacher – Vision (ISTV) position supports schools to make the curriculum accessible to students with confirmed vision disabilities in preschools, primary schools, high schools, schools for specific purposes and support classes. ISTVs work in a multi‑disciplinary team with students, parents and carers, school learning and support teams and other professionals. They conduct student assessments, participate in review meetings, support school staff in making teaching and learning adjustments, provide professional learning for school staff, explicitly teach relevant areas of the expanded core curriculum such as self‑advocacy, independent living skills and safe movement techniques, and commit to relevant ongoing professional learning to develop and maintain expertise in this specialised role.
Responsibilities
- Conduct student assessments for visual impairment.
- Participate in review meetings with multidisciplinary teams.
- Support school staff to adjust teaching and learning for students with vision disabilities.
- Provide professional learning for staff on curriculum accessibility and relevant skills.
- Teach self‑advocacy, independent living skills and safe movement techniques to students.
- Develop and maintain specialised expertise in visual impairment education.
Specific Selection Criteria
- Approval to teach Visual Impairment (Primary) or Visual Impairment (Secondary).
- High level communication, interpersonal and organisational skills with proven capacity to collaborate and build positive relationships with students, staff, parents and external agencies, including Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students and communities.
- Knowledge of and commitment to the Department of Education’s relevant disability policies as well as the policies and protocols supporting Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students in culturally safe environments and respecting cultural practices.
- Experience in the use of braille, assistive technology and associated software including iOS applications to support access to the curriculum and the ability to co‑develop and monitor personalised learning and support plans for students with visual impairments.
Conditions
Applicants must hold an unconditional full approval to teach. If you do not hold a full approval to teach with the NSW Department of Education, you are required to commence the application process at the same time as you apply for this teaching opportunity.
Special Notes
Ability and willingness to travel between worksites. The successful applicant will be required to travel by personal transport to regional and rural schools to support students with visual impairments and will require a current driver’s licence and reliable vehicle.
This is a permanent part‑time position of 2 days per week, 0.4 FTE.
