First Languages Australia (FLA) is the national peak body dedicated to strengthening all Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander languages. We connect language communities across the country and empower them with resources, skills, and knowledge to revive, preserve and speak their languages. Our goal is a future where all Indigenous language communities have full control over their languages and can use them according to their preference.
ABOUT THE OPPORTUNITY
We are seeking expressions of interest from Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander persons to join the FLA Management Committee. This recruitment is part of FLA's regular renewal and retirements process and welcomes applicants from across Australia.
As a Committee Member, this is an exciting opportunity to contribute to the ongoing work of strengthening and revitalising Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander languages, culture, and community by providing strategic leadership and governance, setting strategic goals and guiding policy ideas that shape the future of FLA and the broader Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander languages space.
This is a volunteer position with a sitting fee with travel and expenses covered. The Committee meets four times a year, both in person and online and requires occasional travel throughout Australia. While attendance at additional events or meetings is optional, there are many opportunities to represent the organisation at gatherings and forums if you wish to be involved at a deeper level.
You will work collaboratively with other members to ensure FLA continues to support, strengthen, and celebrate the ongoing use and revitalisation of Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander languages across communities.
