Role Purpose
The Mechanical Controls Technician supports engineers in the design, installation, commissioning, and maintenance of mechanical systems and automated equipment. The role combines technical problem-solving with hands-on assembly, testing, and system integration. Working closely with engineers, fitters, automation technicians, and electricians, the position ensures the smooth operation of advanced mechanical and control systems across diverse industrial projects.

Key Responsibilities
• Assist engineers in the design, development, and commissioning of mechanical and automation systems.
• Assemble, install, and modify mechanical components, control systems, and hydraulic/pneumatic equipment.
• Program, configure, and troubleshoot PLCs, robotics, and control systems in collaboration with the automation team.
• Conduct tests, measurements, and diagnostics on mechanical and electrical systems, analysing results to optimise performance.
• Prepare and maintain technical drawings, schematics, and system documentation under engineer direction.
• Perform preventive and corrective maintenance, ensuring compliance with safety and operational standards.
• Support continuous improvement initiatives, recommending efficiency enhancements to processes and equipment.
• Train operators, apprentices, and contractors on system use and safe practices where required.
• Ensure all work is delivered within regulatory, safety, and contractual requirements.

Qualifications & Experience
Essential
• Diploma/Advanced Diploma in Mechanical, Electrical, or Mechatronic Engineering (or equivalent).
• OR at least 3 years’ relevant mechanical/automation experience in lieu of formal qualifications.
• Demonstrated experience with mechanical assembly, fitting, and controls integration.
• Knowledge of PLC, HMI, and/or robotic programming (Omron, Siemens, Rockwell, Fanuc, ABB preferred).
• Strong skills in diagnosis and fault finding across electrical, mechanical, pneumatic, and hydraulic systems.
• Familiarity with CAD or system design software (SolidWorks, AutoCAD, etc.).
• Commitment to safety and compliance with engineering standards.

Desirable
• Tickets/licences such as White Card, EWP, Forklift, or Confined Space.
• Experience in project lifecycle support from design through to commissioning.
• Exposure to additive manufacturing, advanced robotics, or automation innovation.
