Belvoir Special School is a multi-mode specialist school in Wodonga which provides a high quality educational program for students with mild, moderate and profound intellectual disabilities. Many students also have a level of Physical disability. Students range in age from five to eighteen years of age. In 2014 the school moved to a brand new purpose built facility which has been constructed for a peak enrolment of around 180 students. Current student population is 179.

To attend the school students must meet the statewide eligibility criteria and are enrolled at Belvoir Special School after consultation with parents, previous schools or kindergartens and appropriate paramedic personnel if needed, in accordance with the school¿s documented enrolment policy. Our school¿s philosophy is reflected in its programs and based on the belief that children learn best in a co-operative environment that is happy, challenging, supportive and non-threatening. Belvoir is a School Wide Positive Behaviour Support School and has developed a school culture that is reflected by the ideals of SWPBS.

Role

A school nurse supports the Belvoir Special School community. The role involves and is not limited to:-

- Developing and implementing health plans.
- Providing confidential health advice and health care for children with special needs, disabilities; and medical conditions.
- Supporting, advising, and referring young people to Mental Health Practitioners.
- Providing advice to parents, caregivers and staff on management of illnesses and control of infectious diseases.
- Implementing immunisation programs.
- Provide education on personal, social and health care to students and families, such as Asthma, diabetes and epilepsy,

Range 4 is distinguished by broader management responsibility, particularly in the areas of finance, human resource and other support functions. Range 4 is responsible for managing a range of functions under a wide range of conditions; subject to the size and complexity of school operations.

Objectives will, generally, be clearly defined; guidelines will be broad and day-to-day direction minimal, Management responsibility extends to ensuring appropriate support levels are maintained across the school. Range 4 generally provides key support and timely advice to the leadership team and school council and liaises with the general school community, the Department and other government agencies and service providers.

Specialised professional roles will carry a high level of independence and accountability where suitable scope is provided to achieve objectives.

An education support class position supports the educational services being provided to students, but must not include duties of teaching as defined in clause 2.6.1 of the Education and Training Reform Act 2006 (Vic) or its successor. Supervision of students cannot be required except where it is an integral part of the employee position or involves supervision of students individually or in small groups, In controlled circumstances, where the responsibility for students remains clearly with a teacher.

Responsibilities

- Provide an effective primary nursing role and ensure appropriate and timely first aid treatment for students and staff during the school term.
- Provide health advice regarding the management of student health needs to staff as applicable.
- Administer Schedule 2 and 3 (non-prescription) medications.
- Administer medication to students which is supplied by parents/guardians; Contact and refer to other medical and health practitioners, where needed.
- Consult with parents/guardians regarding illness/injury refated matters.
- Work with RN to ensure that staff are up to date in relation to medical alerts/medical data, particularly in relation to Anaphylaxis and Asthma management, communication plans and Health Plans.
- Assist RN with the Immunisatlon program for students.
- Work with RN/staff and parents to ensure students with high medical needs are met,
- Maintain well documented health records on all students including medical history, incidents, and treatment reporting.
- Liaise with teachers regarding the management of an individual student's condition or injury when necessary Working with RN to ensure medical management plans (including risk minimisation plans) for students with anaphylaxis, asthma, diabetes, and other serious medical conditions are updated regularly and communicated to relevant staff.
- Practice within a professional and ethical nursing framework.
- Advocates for and protects the rights of children and young people.
- Coordinates, organises, and provides health promotion considering the whole of school community approach and focuses on all sectors of the school.
- Entering Injury Report Data on to CASES21, XUNO and Edusafe.
- Organising first aid supplies for excursions, camps, and whole-school activities.
- Monitor defib machines across the school.
- Reviewing and replenish first aid kits located in various locations around the school to ensure all items are within expiration date and are fully stocked.
- Participates in ongoing professional development as relevant to the role and registration requirements.
- Other duties as directed by the school Business Manager or Principal

- Current Victorian Nurses Board Registration
- First Aid Certification- updated 3 yearly
- Current Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation certification
- Willing to obtain training within the education setting (Anaphylaxis and Asthma Victoria qualifications).
- Current experience as a EEN Nurse within the past 5 years
- Current driver's licence
