Sister/Charge Nurse - Oncology Day Unit

An opportunity has arisen for a Sister/Charge Nurse on the Oncology Day Unit. We are looking for an experienced Nurse with Oncology and Chemotherapy experience to join our team on a permanent basis.

You will have the passion and drive to take charge of the unit, lead the nursing team and continue to help develop the service. You will have excellent communication and clinical skills, and put patients at the heart of your work.

The Oncology Day Unit has 17 treatment spaces. There is also use of James Watson Suite for care of patients undergoing brachytherapy. The Oncology Day Unit is open 6 days per week 07:30-20:00 on weekdays and 07:30-16:00 on Saturdays.

You must demonstrate competence at leading shifts, knowledge and experience in Oncology and be competent in chemotherapy administration. This is an exciting time to join the cancer nursing team at CUH as we continue to develop and grow our services for patients.

You will be responsible for coordinating the Day Unit as well as supporting the Senior Sister.

Be competent in providing safe and effective care, including the administration of systemic anti cancer therapy to the patients on the Unit.

To participate in the supervision, teaching, mentorship and appraisal of pre and post registration staff.

Demonstrate professional leadership and act as a role model, ensuring the provision of a high quality, effective and safe clinical service in line with the corporate nursing and midwifery agenda.

Main duties of the job

To assist the Senior Sister in the overall management of the Oncology Day Unit and to provide safe, individualised, holistic and evidence based, patient focused care for Oncology patients within the service.

Person Specification

Qualifications

- Registered Nurse

- Studied to at least diploma level

- Evidence of continued professional development

- Development that is pertinent to the specialty

- Registered mentor or willingness to undertake qualification.

- A specialist cancer module

- Advanced communication

- Nurse‑led Clinic competency or willingness to work towards

Experience

- Significant experience in Oncology/Cancer

- Care of patients with life‑threatening illness

- Mentoring and preceptorship

- Managing people

- Managing a service area in the absence of more senior staff

- Coordination of shift

- Care of patient undergoing Brachytherapy

- Experience of working with external organisations.

Knowledge

- Good level of knowledge in cancer and it's treatment

- The impact of cancer on the patient and their family

- Some understanding of team dynamics and how one influences these.

- Risk Management process (with Clinical Governance)

- Awareness of broader issues that affecting Healthcare provision.

Skills

- Competent in IV drug administration

- Venepuncture and cannulation

- Competent in administration of Systemic anti‑cancer treatment

- Caseload and workload management

- Teamwork

- Will actively intervene to improve patient outcomes

- Able to effectively and safely hold the directorate bleep

- Counselling skills
