About This Opportunity

This is an exciting opportunity for a Postdoctoral Research Fellow to join Associate Professor Tyler Neely and Professor Halina Rubinsztein-Dunlop's team at the UQ Bose-Einstein Condensation Lab on a new ARC Discovery Project exploring quantum turbulence and vortex matter simulation.

The project focuses on using highly controlled optical trapping of Bose-Einstein condensates to generate quantum vortices in a flat geometry. Leveraging the group's expertise in programmable optical tweezers and DMDs, the research aims to investigate the melting process of 2D crystals and explore the existence of a hexatic phase in long-range interacting systems.

The successful candidate will maintain and enhance the BEC apparatus, develop and conduct experiments, and contribute to the supervision of Honours and HDR students. This role offers an opportunity to further develop a strong research profile and gain national recognition in the field.

Key responsibilities will include:

Research

- Conduct research and develop a research program in experimental quantum turbulence and manipulation of quantum vortices to enable studies of 2D melting.

- Innovate and pursue the aims of the Discovery Project, including determining the existence and persistence of a hexatic phase and associate excitations.

- Produce quality research outputs consistent with discipline norms by publishing or exhibiting in national research journals, other appropriate refereed publications and conference publications, with a lead role in some outputs.

- Participate in applications (usually in conjunction with more experienced researchers) for competitive research funding to support projects and activities, including early-career fellowship applications.

- Review and draw upon best practice research methodologies.

- Present research at department and group meetings and aim to present at national and international conferences.

About You

- Completion or near completion of a PhD in the discipline area, along with a strong record of PhD achievement.

- A growing profile in research in the discipline area.

- Experimental skills relevant to the laboratory projects with a strong record of achievement and evident expertise in the research area.
