About the role
We're searching for critical thinkers who are passionate about using data to solve both business and technical challenges. You should have strong expertise in the Australian electricity market, along with a proven background in data analysis using Python and similar tools. This is a key role at Powerline, where your insights will directly shape the company’s strategy.
As an Energy Analyst, you’ll work closely with the founders and a talented team of engineers to explore and answer some of the most pressing questions in the energy sector. Join us as an early, foundational team member at a rapidly growing climate-tech company. This is your chance to make a real impact on critical issues in the world’s most important and fast-evolving markets.
This position is based in Australia, with a preference for candidates who can work from our Melbourne office two to three days per week.
Requirements
- Experience in analyzing, trading, and/or supporting trading decisions in the wholesale energy markets such as AEMO, UK, and the US, or relevant experience.
- Experience in combing through large energy databases, performing high-quality analyses, and extracting data-driven insights for operational, commercial, and/or technical decisions.
- Ability to support the commercial team by identifying areas of high commercial value for analysis.
- Ability to design questions and conduct experiments to help business development and business strategy decisions.
- Ability to support algorithm engineers for new forecasting and optimization products.
- Familiarity with Python and its useful libraries (such as pandas) for time series data analysis and visualization.
- Strong critical thinking, independence, and curiosity.
- Excellent communication skills. You'll need to clearly and consistently convey complex findings to the team.
- Meticulous attention to detail. Your work’s accuracy is crucial, as both the role’s and the company’s success depend on it. We need to fully trust the results, so the stakes are high.
- Ability to thrive in fast-paced environments.
- Familiarity with database query languages, such as MySQL, PostgreSQL, cQL, etc.
Strong Plus
- Ability to develop automated reports, analysis, and dashboards to continually monitor and track energy market trends.
- Familiarity with Git, Jira / Confluence, Docker.
- Master’s or PhD in relevant fields, with a strong math and statistics foundation.
