Position Overview
Snowy Valleys School is a school for specific purposes that caters for the educational and wellbeing needs for 30 students from (K‑12) with a moderate to severe intellectual disability, autism and complex needs including physical disability, sensory impairment, challenging behaviour and health care needs. The school has 5 permanent classes. Snowy Valleys School is in the rural town of Tumut and is part of the Gundagai Network of Schools. The school has a reputation for quality special education and values strong relationships with families, key stakeholders from allied health services, local support agencies and the community. Our school values are Respect, Responsibility and Safety which underpin our Snowy Valleys Blues program. The school is strongly focused on quality teaching, curriculum delivery, high expectations, student wellbeing programs such as the Stephanie Alexander Kitchen Garden program to prepare our students for their life after school through our comprehensive Transition to Work Program. All these programs prepare our students to achieve the school motto ‘Planning and Learning Today for Living and Working Tomorrow’.
Specific Selection Criteria
- Approval to teach special education and/or experience teaching students with autism, intellectual disabilities, challenging behaviours and complex and diverse needs, including students impacted by trauma who may have mental health / emotional disturbances.
- High level organisational and management skills to balance classroom teaching with the complex administration demands of the Assistant Principal role, in line with Department of Education policies and procedures.
- Ability to lead, support and mentor colleagues to plan and implement evidence‑based practices using contemporary knowledge and understanding of curriculum, assessment and reporting requirements to deliver high quality differentiated learning and teaching programs.
General Selection Criteria
1. Successful teaching experience with capacity to initiate improvement in teaching, learning and classroom practice
2. Knowledge of curriculum, assessment and student welfare with the ability to lead and design quality, inclusive teaching and learning programs
3. Educational leadership skills to build the capacity and manage the performance of individuals and teams
4. Well developed communication and interpersonal skills with the capacity to build relationships and engage students, staff and parents
5. Ability to plan and manage resources effectively and equitably to support teaching and learning
6. Knowledge of and commitment to the Department's Aboriginal education policy
Conditions
Unconditional full approval to teach is a requirement. If you do not hold a full approval to teach with the NSW Department of Education, you are required to commence the application process at the same time as you apply for this teaching opportunity.
