About the Opportunity
Georges River Council is seeking a dedicated and proactive Ranger Waste to join our Environment and Planning Directorate. This role plays a vital part in regulating waste-related matters within the Local Government Area (LGA), with a strong focus on illegal dumping and unattended property. You will operate under various legislative frameworks including the Protection of the Environment Operations Act 1997, Local Government Act 1993, Public Spaces (Unattended Property) Act 2021, Road Transport Act 2013, Roads Regulation 2018 and Environmental Planning and Assessment Act 1979.
As Ranger Waste, you will develop, implement, and manage surveillance programs across the LGA, including the use of cameras, to support timely investigations into illegal dumping and unattended items. You will gather and record evidence, conduct interviews, and issue regulatory notices such as Clean Up Directions, Orders, and fines. Regular patrols will be conducted to monitor known and emerging dumping hotspots, and you will maintain a database to track these locations.
The role also involves conducting inspections, documenting investigations, and responding to service requests in line with corporate response times and WHS best practices. You will promote compliance with the Code of Practice for Class 2 Items under the Public Spaces (Unattended Property) Act, liaise with key stakeholders, and contribute to enforcement and education campaigns. Additionally, you may be required to prepare court documents and present evidence in legal proceedings.
We are looking for someone who can follow internal procedures accurately, maintain up-to-date knowledge of relevant legislation, and participate in ongoing training and development. You will represent Council professionally in all public interactions and support broader business needs across the Directorate as directed.
What We Offer

- Salary from $81,301.88 - $94,200.62 per annum plus 12% superannuation (dependent on the skills, qualifications and relevant experience of the suitable candidate)

What We Are Looking For
- Certificate IV in Local Government (Regulatory Services) or equivalent Regulatory Qualifications, or enrolled in and working towards such qualification or demonstrated relevant regulatory experience
- Class C Drivers licence
- Previous experience in undertaking public sector regulatory duties
- Understanding of the development of risk assessments and Work Method Statements
- Experience in the use of the SEINS system
- Experience in the issuing of Notices, Orders and Fines under legislation for which Council is the appropriate regulatory authority
- Knowledge of and experience in the investigation of offences under the Protection of the Environment Operations Act 1997, Local Government Act 1993, Public Spaces (Unattended Property) Act 2021, Road Transport Act 2013, Roads Regulation 2018, and Environmental Planning and Assessment Act 1979
- Experience in interviewing techniques, taking statements, preparation of statements for prosecution and attendance/representation in Court
- Demonstrated high proficiency in customer service with well-developed verbal and written communication skills and the ability to articulate information clearly and concisely
- Sound proficiency in computer skills including Microsoft Office suite
- Demonstrated level of conflict resolution and mediation skills
- Proven ability to work well within a team environment
- Ability to work in Council’s rotating shift roster with scheduled work times between 7am and 6pm Monday to Friday, with some weekend shifts when required, and agreed arrangements for after-hours complaint investigations
- A demonstrated commitment to EEO and WHS principles
