BMD is Australia's leading integrated engineering, construction and urban development business. As the largest privately owned civil contractor in Australia, BMD is at the forefront of excellence, with a growing international footprint extending to the Philippines and the United Kingdom. Driven by a purpose of powering futures and creating enduring legacies, we deliver complex infrastructure solutions that connect and transform communities. For over 45 years, our diverse portfolio of projects and roles provides exceptional opportunities for our people to grow and make a lasting impact. As part of our team, you'll help deliver challenging projects, supported by leadership within an inclusive people-first culture.
Who we are looking for:
We're looking for a Legal Counsel to join our small, high-performing in-house legal team. This is an opportunity to work closely with the General Counsel and provide practical, solution-focused legal advice to a business that builds some of Australia's most significant infrastructure and urban development projects. This role is ideal for a lawyer with 3–8 years post-admission experience in property, employment/IR, or construction law—whether from private practice or an existing in-house role—who is ready to step into a commercially engaged and people-focused legal position. More than just your technical expertise, we're looking for someone who will fit culturally—someone who is approachable, collaborative, pragmatic, and comfortable rolling up their sleeves to get things done.
Key Responsibilities:
- Provide timely, commercial legal advice across a wide range of matters including property development, infrastructure delivery, employment/HR, and corporate operations.
- Review, draft and negotiate contracts with clients, subcontractors, suppliers, consultants, and property stakeholders across various project stages.
- Work closely with the General Counsel to support the broader business on legal risk, contract strategy, dispute resolution, compliance, and governance.
- Assist in managing external legal advisors and coordinate cost-effective legal support when required.
- Contribute to the delivery of legal training and guidance to business units across the country.
- Monitor legal and regulatory developments (including construction, employment, planning, ESG, and WHS) and provide strategic insight to internal stakeholders.
- Assist with company secretarial matters and preparation of legal updates to the BMD Board and Executive.
- Support dispute management and resolution processes (negotiation, adjudication, mediation or litigation), where needed.
The successful candidate will be a self-starter that possesses:
- Admitted lawyer in Australia with a current practising certificate.
- 3–8 years post-admission experience, ideally in construction, property, employment/IR, or general commercial law.
- Prior in-house experience (preferred, but not essential) or secondment experience will be well regarded.
- A commercial mindset with strong drafting, communication, and negotiation skills.
- A collaborative, down-to-earth approach, aligned with BMD's relationship-based culture.
- Someone who thrives in a fast-paced environment and is comfortable working across varied legal issues.
