Visiting Medical Officer in General Medicine

Visiting Medical Officer in Acute General Medicine at John Hunter Hospital, a Level 6, tertiary referral, major trauma and teaching hospital with approximately 650 beds.

John Hunter Hospital services a population of 800,000+ and has strong connections with Hunter Medical Research Institute and University of Newcastle.

About MACU at John Hunter Hospital

The MACU is a high-acuity, short-stay unit designed to:

- Rapidly assess and manage patients presenting with acute medical conditions.
- Streamline admission and discharge processes.
- Reduce pressure on the Emergency Department (ED) and inpatient wards.

It typically serves as a gateway between ED and inpatient medical teams, focusing on early diagnostics, multidisciplinary care, and timely decision-making.

As a General Medicine specialist in MACU, your responsibilities may include:

- Acute patient assessment: Rapid evaluation of undifferentiated medical presentations.
- Clinical decision-making: Determining admission, discharge, or transfer to specialty units.
- Team leadership: Supervising junior doctors, coordinating with nursing staff, and liaising with allied health professionals.
- Multidisciplinary collaboration: Working closely with ED, radiology, pathology, and specialty teams.
- Teaching and mentoring: Supporting medical education for JMOs and registrars.

Requirements of the role:

- A primary medical degree registered with AHPRA and General Medicine Fellowship of the Royal College of Physicians
- Recent and comprehensive experience in Acute General Medicine and in a tertiary level MACU team
- Experience in or knowledge of programs for improving the organisation and delivery of care in Acute General Medicine
