A: Primary Role:

To engage in the development of clinical practice guidelines for surgeons under the auspices of the guidelines committee of the SAGES.

To effectively guide SAGES guidelines committee working groups and panelists in the development of guidelines. To participate in publications of developed guidelines and in research projects of the department as needed.

The SAGES Australian Fellowship is a collaboration between the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons’ ASERNIP-S group and SAGES. The research is to be conducted under both the supervision of a systematic review expert (RACS ASERNIP-S) and an Australian-based SAGES representative and is to support the development of a Clinical Practice Guideline (CPG) and a health technology assessment (HTA).

The expectation is that, if an overseas-based applicant is the recipient, that they would reside in Adelaide, Australia for the duration of the scholarship. The recipient will be assisted to enrol in and expected to complete a higher degree program in Adelaide.

B: Primary Duties and Responsibilities:

Study guideline development methodology under the supervisor’s and methodologist’s guidance.

Produce high-quality guidelines and related publications that have significant impact in the field, and make a significant contribution to the department’s and SAGES reputation at a national and international level.

Define key questions for guidelines, perform literature searches, develop evidence map and extraction tables, and formulate evidence-based recommendations.

Develop expertise in assessing the quality and risk of bias of the literature and become familiar with the methodology of meta-analyses.

Participation in regularly scheduled conference calls with SAGES guideline committee members and methodologists.

Make presentations at national or international conferences and identify ways to disseminate guidelines via the internet, the media and other forms of public engagement. There will be an expectation to present at the annual meeting of the Surgical Research Society of Australasia.

Proposed Time Requirement: 40 hours per week

C: Qualifications

Minimum Education: MD or MBBS degree; or research degree (MPH, PhD or equivalent). Prior experience with systematic reviews is viewed favorably but is not required

Required knowledge, skills, and abilities: Strong organizational skills, maintain detailed records and the ability to adapt and learn new knowledge and techniques quickly. Experience with appraisal of literature is preferred.

Excellent written and verbal communication skills for academic writing and presentations.

The successful candidate must be a member of SAGES upon commencement of the fellowship.

D: Level of Decision Making:Primarily the fellow will be working on the projects under the mentorship of their supervisor. Will work closely with other members of the SAGES guidelines committee.

Increasing autonomy is expected over time, including the ability to independently lead components of the guideline development process such as evidence synthesis and panel steering.
