General Manager Engineering
The General Manager, Engineering plays a pivotal role in shaping the technology foundations behind some of Australia’s most recognised news websites, digital products, and print publications. You’ll lead the engineering functions that build, maintain, and optimise our platforms—driving performance, scalability, cloud efficiency, technical excellence, and innovation across the business.
You’ll oversee four Lead Engineers, ensuring all engineering outputs align with agreed standards, design patterns, and best-practice guidelines. This role requires a strong technical background and the ability to operate as both a strategic leader and a hands‑on technical guide—setting clear engineering principles, uplifting quality, and strengthening our community of practice.
With responsibility for defining objectives and measurable success metrics, you’ll shape how engineering operates across NCA. You’ll collaborate closely with Architecture, Platform Managers, and delivery partners to tackle complex technical challenges, reduce technical debt, evolve legacy systems, and drive a culture of collaboration and continuous improvement. Leading a team of four, you’ll inspire high performance while elevating engineering capability across teams, partners, and platforms.
Key Responsibilities
- Develop and embed engineering standards covering code quality, testing, modularity, scalability, performance, security, and cloud consumption.
- Drive innovation, efficiency, and best practice across engineering teams, improving tooling, automation, and ways of working.
- Oversee engineering functions, ensuring alignment with standards, guidelines, and project/operational delivery expectations.
- Define and track key engineering metrics, including code quality, throughput, cost, and system performance.
- Lead governance forums with Architecture and Platform Managers to address complex technical challenges and minimise technical debt.
- Mentor and develop high‑performing teams, fostering collaboration, technical excellence, and continuous improvement.
- Collaborate with Architecture, Platform Managers, and delivery partners to remediate legacy systems and define future‑state solutions.
