Consultant with an interest in Neuroanaesthesia
2 days ago
Overview
University Hospitals Sussex NHS Foundation Trust is seeking an outstanding Neuroanaesthetic consultant to join our team. The department is dynamic with an excellent reputation for teaching, research and innovation for the benefit of our population. The successful applicant will have the opportunity to hone and expand clinical skills and develop services within University Hospitals Sussex and partner organisations.
This is a new post arising from the expansion of neurosurgical and interventional neuroradiology services following relocation to the Louisa Martindale Building in 2023. The Neuroanaesthetic Team will expand to 12 specialists providing anaesthesia for neurosurgical, spinal and interventional neuroradiology in the Trust/'s 3Ts Neurosciences Centre. We offer a mix of specialist neurosurgical lists, neuroradiology and flexible general anaesthetic work. New post holders will become equal participants in existing teams. Additional skills in other areas (e.g., regional anaesthesia) would be welcomed.
Visiting our departments prior to interview is encouraged; contact with the clinical leads or clinical director prior to application is welcomed if you are unfamiliar with the hospital.
Main duties of the job
Due to the nature of the work, considerable experience in delivering anaesthesia for a wide range of intracranial, neuroradiological and spinal procedures is expected, along with familiarity with the specialist monitoring these patients may require. As an expanding service, there are opportunities to lead service development and quality improvement projects; experience and enthusiasm in these areas is welcome.
We are a large teaching department with an associated medical school, so all consultants are expected to participate in education and training of medical and non-medical colleagues. Those with a proven track record in delivering education will have plenty to occupy themselves.
Further details of the duties can be obtained by contacting the clinical lead or clinical director.
About us

Job responsibilities
The job plan will include neurosurgical, neuroradiological and/or spinal lists at Royal Sussex County Hospital, and flexible general lists at Royal Sussex or Princess Royal Hospitals, depending on interest and skill set. Each half-day session is 5 hours (1.25 programmed activities). On-call commitment is to the emergency neurosurgical service at Royal Sussex County Hospital, supported by four tiers of residents. Non-neurosurgical cases are covered by other on-call consultant groups. The intensive care unit is staffed separately.
Participation in monthly department governance meetings and revalidation requirements will be included within the 1 SPA allocation of this post. There will also be responsibilities for supervising and assessing specialist trainees and other members of the multidisciplinary team.
The post holder will have a commitment to teaching undergraduates and postgraduates with evidence of active participation in teaching.
On appointment to the Trust, consultants are expected to work from any Trust site.
