Position Information

Northern Beaches Secondary College (NBSC) Balgowlah Boys Campus (enrolment 1,140 students) is a comprehensive Year 7-12 boys' high school and is part of a collaboration with Cromer, Freshwater Senior, Mackellar Girls and Manly campuses. The campus has a commitment to innovative teaching to engage boys in their learning. Students are challenged to achieve their personal best in all aspects of their education in a caring learning environment. The campus has an active Parents and Citizens Association which supports the school in its provision of resources and extracurricular activities. The campus’ reputation as a consistently high performing school is underpinned by explicit teaching strategies to build a strong foundation in literacy and numeracy.

The college includes more than 4,800 students and 450 staff led by the College Management Team (CMT). The CMT comprises the college and campus principals and is responsible for the administration of staffing and financial resource to achieve key educational and wellbeing outcomes. NBSC operates 20 collaborative staff networks based around key learning and operational areas in addition to a student and parent consultative group. The networks lead a number of collaborative strategic initiatives across the college focused on coordination and communication, wellbeing, professional dialogue and curriculum support.

Grounded in explicit teaching philosophy, the English Faculty at Balgowlah Boys leads the state in comprehensive boy’s education through the explicit scaffolding and modelling of writing. The texts selected for study in class introduce the boys to a wide variety of different styles and voices without compromising on academic rigour. A high priority is placed on in‑faculty teacher development, requiring teachers to produce modelled responses for feedback from experienced members of the team. Similarly, a high emphasis is placed on timely, effective, and recursive feedback on student writing, ensuring that they comply with the faculty‑produced scaffolds and structures. The faculty is highly collaborative with each teacher being expected to contribute the shared resources.

Specific Selection Criteria

- Approval to teach English Years 7-10, English Years 11-12 and English Extension 1 & 2.

- Demonstrated ability to implement explicit, academically rigorous teaching strategies that engage boys and strengthen literacy skills, while fostering positive and respectful relationships with students, staff, and families.

- Proven capability to collaborate within the English faculty to design, refine, and deliver high-quality, inclusive teaching programs that improve learning outcomes for diverse students and support a cohesive school community.

Conditions

An unconditional full approval to teach is a requirement. If you do not hold a full approval to teach with the NSW Department of Education, you are required to commence the application process at the same time as you apply for this teaching opportunity.

Special Notes

Applicants are to include details of their WWCC clearance number as part of this application.
