A little bit about us

The Bureau of Communications, Arts and Regional Research (BCARR) is the Department’s economic and statistical research team on communications, arts, cities and regions.

It supports evidence-based policy and program development and advice and stimulates informed discussion on portfolio issues. BCARR also produces a number of publications through its research program. For examples of BCARR publications, see the web page.

The opportunity we have available

The research economist role sits within the Communications, Arts and Market Analysis team. This team is responsible for producing forward-looking economic, market, and industry research to support evidence-based policy development.

The research economist role will contribute to a mix of longer-term research projects and shorter-term requests for advice from stakeholders. This could involve tasks like reporting on the uptake of communications technologies to an international body, undertaking labour market analysis on Arts-related industries, or using macroeconomic data to measure the productivity impacts of industries.

What will you do?

In this role, you will:
- Contribute to forward-looking economic research and analysis to build the Communications and Arts sector evidence base.-
- Conduct data analysis and create data visualisations using software like RStudio and Power BI.-
- Communicate technical findings from a range of quantitative and qualitative data sources to produce clear research and advice.-
- Work collaboratively in a supportive team that is committed to producing high‑quality research and analysis.-
- Liaise and manage relationships with key internal and external stakeholders.-
- Perform regular reporting to international bodies such as the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) and Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD).What else can we offer?

- Data analysis skills to solve policy problems and create data visualisations (experience in Excel, RStudio and Power BI are desirable).-
- The ability to produce accessible written communication, including communicating material of a technical nature to a broader audience.- Relevant qualifications or equivalent experience in economics, econometrics, data analytics, statistics or related fields would be highly regarded.
