**The Role**

The Custodial Mental Health Aboriginal Peer Worker who will use their own lived experience to support positive engagement with Aboriginal Mental Health patients in Long Bay Hospital 13 Wing.

The Custodial Mental Health Aboriginal Peer Worker will assist patients with understanding mental health treatments, connecting with their family network and identified elders in the community and advocating for their psychosocial needs in custody, such as referrals to other available specialty health (e.g. AMS, primary care, drug and alcohol, psychology) and social services (e.g. welfare, parole).Must be of Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander descent (N.B. applicants race is a genuine occupational qualification and is authorised under Section 14 of the Anti-Discrimination Act 1977, NSW).

**ESSENTIAL REQUIREMENTS**

1. Must be a person of Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander decent
- an applicant's race is a genuine occupational qualification and is authorised under Section 14 of the Anti-Discrimination Act 1997 NSW.

2. Certificate IV in Peer Work, or willingness to obtain this qualification; or relevant health related qualification and combination of experience.

3. Personal experience as a consumer of mental health services and ability to utilise the lived experience to support others in their own mental health recovery journey.

**Our Location, Team, and Service**

Custodial Mental Health (CMH) is a specialist mental health service within Justice Health and Forensic Mental Health Network (the Network) that provides a range of mental health services to adults in NSW correctional centres.

CMH is a specialist mental health team, which has mental health nurses (MHNs), nurse practitioners (NPs), Aboriginal Mental Health Clinicians, psychiatrists, career medical officers (CMOs), and psychiatry registrars who are supported by administrative and managerial staff. CMH clinicians work alongside staff from other Network clinical streams and CSNSW staff, including Psychology, Offender Services and Programs, and Custodial Operations staff in the provision of mental health services.

Mental health services begin at the point of reception and continue through to release from custody or transfer to another correctional centre.
