**An ongoing Behaviour Support Specialist (BSS) position is currently available for a motivated, analytical team player to join the team at Parkville and Malmsbury precincts.**

**About us**

The Department of Justice and Community Safety is responsible for the supervision of children and young people in the criminal justice system. The two Youth Justice Custodial Precincts in Victoria are managed by the department. Parkville Youth Justice Precinct is located in the inner northern Melbourne suburb of Parkville, and Malmsbury Youth Justice Precinct is located approximately 100 kilometres north of Melbourne.

Youth Justice Custodial Services is part of the Youth Justice Division and is responsible for services related to managing the two Youth Justice Custodial Precincts in Victoria.

**What does a Behaviour Support Specialist do?**

You will engage and work collaboratively with key stakeholders to develop individualised strategies to manage and assist in reducing the complex behaviours of young people in custody. This position will also involve:

- Undertaking Functional Behavioural Assessments to develop Behaviour Support Plans containing evidence-based, proactive strategies that meet the specific needs of the young person displaying behaviours of concern.
- Developing individualised strategies in conjunction with unit staff and young people that are responsive to the young person's needs, and assist in reducing the occurrence and impact of behaviours of concern.
- Working alongside and coaching unit staff to demonstrate and reinforce the implementation of strengths based behaviour strategies.
- Attending community meetings with staff and young people to further support and guide staff in engaging and intervening with young people to address their behaviour.

Reporting to the Senior Behaviour Support Specialist, you will work alongside the operations team, unit-based youth justice staff and the young people accommodated in that unit. You will be based across both precincts and will work with various stakeholders to achieve intervention plan goals.

**What skills should a Behaviour Support Specialist have?**
- Experience in social work, psychology, counselling or behavioural therapy.
- The ability to undertake functional behavioural assessments with complex young people as the basis for the development of evidence-based, proactive behaviour support plans.
- An understanding of the impact of trauma on young people's behaviour, with the ability to identify appropriate positive behaviour strategies based on individual young people's needs.
- Demonstrated critical thinking and problem solving skills that are applied through deep understanding and interpretation of existing guidelines.
- Understanding of the youth justice custodial environment is desirable.
