Bureau's Business Solutions Group. It is the primary provider of environmental intelligence to national security agencies, specifically the Department of Defence and the Australian Defence Force (ADF). Services provided by Defence Weather Services enhance Australia's national security agenda through the provision of weather, water, ocean, climate and space weather. The team provides forecasts, data, real-time observations, meteorological training and professional advice to assist decision-making and planning for ADF operations and activities. The Program is also involved in initiating and delivering collaborative capability enhancement projects striving for continuous improvement.

We are seeking a dedicated and motivated professional to join the Bureau of Meteorology’s Defence Weather Services (DWS) team as a Defence Decision Support Meteorologist. DWS consists of eight Defence Operations sites, split into two focus areas. These are the Meteorological Intelligence Support Team (MIST), which supports the ADF Headquarters Joint Operations Command (HQJOC) planning and operations, and the Defence Weather Service Offices (DWSOs), which are focused on supporting military aviation at sites that are located within ADF establishments.

Defence Decision Support Meteorologists (MIST) work in a dynamic and customer focused environment and are responsible for building and maintaining close working relationships with operational ADF units and personnel. As a member of a small office the successful applicant will also need to build strong and trusting relationships with colleagues, while being able to work independently. Excellent communication and time management skills will be required.

The successful applicant will be required to provide timely weather watch for Australia and other areas of ADF operations worldwide, provide guidance to senior ADF personnel on meteorological and Bureau specialised products and services for security and intelligence briefings. The position also ensures the efficient production of meteorological forecasts in support of Defence operations and exercises. Confidence in making independent meteorological decisions will be required, together with the ability to know when and how to reach out for support.

MIST Meteorologist roles are shift based roles and the work is located at HQJOC near Bungendore in NSW. The successful applicant will need to attain and maintain at least a Positive Vetting (PV) Security Clearance. This requirement can be obtained once appointed.

A typical day as a Defence Meteorologist may involve:

- Provision of tailored military forecasts, warning and observation services, both in Australia and overseas.
- Delivery of verbal and written briefs for a range of ADF personnel, both operational and strategic in nature.
- Provision of meteorological advice that is tailored to specific asset requirements.
- Participation in disaster response and relief activities conducted by the ADF.
- Short-term deployment with the ADF locally, domestically, or internationally if desired.
- Actively seeking future project and support opportunities for the Department of Defence and the ADF.
- Assisting the program in reaching its strategic goals.
