Deakin Research Innovations (DRI) is a division at the Office of the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Research) responsible for the commercial research operations and commercialising the University’s expertise, new technology and innovations. DRI team identifies, plans and implements strategies for growing commercial research income for the University in line with the Deakin 2030 Ideas to Impact strategy.

The Commercial Manager, Research (Innovation & Sustainability), will work closely with the Director, Commercial Research - Innovation & Sustainability to contribute identifying future trends in commercial research needs of industry and government organisations; engaging them to expand Deakin’s research outreach by providing evidence-based solutions to industry-based challenging research problems.

The incumbent will have a particular internal client focus aligned to one or more of Deakin’s research strengths to build strong professional relationships with Deakin researchers and develop a strong understanding of their expertise and interest to identify and foster commercial research relationships with industry, government, and other public and private sector organisations.

In addition to being responsible for engagement with a portfolio of industry sectors, the incumbent will contribute the development of new strategies and initiatives for growing research, raising commercial research income, and managing commercially focused activities, including negotiating research contracts, licences, and agreements, as well as assisting business case developments.

**Your key responsibilities will include**:

- Developing and maintaining effective networks with government, industry, non-government organisations, technology developers, and providers in assigned portfolios to establish successful and long-term commercial research partnerships.
- Contributing to multi-disciplinary teams of researchers, enabling functions and external partners, to identify, develop and implement initiatives for growing research and industry-based projects, attracting funds for research, fostering collaboration with industry and government, and supporting the commercialisation of research outcomes.
- Facilitating enhancement of capacity building of Deakin researchers and research teams to effectively engage with industry and government and plan for the commercialisation of their research outcomes.
- Contributing to the development, negotiation and execution of commercial research agreements within the context of the research activities and appropriate due diligence of research clients.
- Actively engaging and enabling collaboration across teams and with a diverse range of stakeholders to negotiate inclusive and accessible solutions and achieve strategic goals
- Analysing problems, weighing up a range of options to identify accessible and inclusive solutions and translate complex issues into clear and understandable goals and targets for Deakin.
- Developing, maintaining and using a variety of systems, processes, diverse range of people and sources to gather information and gain deeper understanding and make critical strategic decisions.
- Contributing to the establishment of systems and procedures to guide work and track progress and striving for excellence and continually evaluating progress and effectively overcoming barriers to achieve outcomes.
- Using accepted theory and practices to develop and deploy continuous improvement actions to ensure implementation of continuous improvement strategies in own work area.
- Developing a network of useful contacts within Deakin and integrate perspectives held within different areas of the University and puts plans in place to build collaboration and develop common goals.
- Using understanding of the client context to anticipate needs, tailor services, improve service offering and ensuring a high-quality outcome by addressing client feedback and setting service standards.
