Kingston, Australia Australian Department of the Environment Full time

Senior Research Scientist (EL 2) - $132,155- $163,620 per annum plus superannuation
- Australian Antarctic Division
- Kingston, TAS
- The Polar Atmospheric Dynamicist will lead polar atmospheric dynamical process studies, focussing on their influence on the state of the Antarctic atmosphere and their role in the global climate system. As part of the atmospheric research team they will:
- _Conduct scientific research on key polar-atmosphere dynamical processes. _
- _Improve our understanding of the global influence of the Antarctic atmosphere. _
- _Join an international observing and collaboration network._

**Who we are**
The Australian Antarctic Division (AAD) is part of the Commonwealth Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water. As primary agency for Australia's Antarctic Program (AAP), the AAD is responsible for achieving the Australian Government's Antarctic goals. These goals are to:

- maintain the Antarctic Treaty System and enhance Australia's influence within it,
- protect the Antarctic environment,
- understand the role of Antarctica in the global climate system,
- undertake scientific work of practical, economic and national significance.

The AAD also has responsibility for administering the Australian Antarctic Territory and the Territory of Heard and McDonald Islands.

The AAD Science Branch leads, conducts and supports a world class program of scientific research and environmental management, consistent with national priorities through the Australian Antarctic Science Strategic Plan. The branch provides research and advice to support Australia’s Antarctic policy objectives, including participation in the Antarctic Treaty system and other international committees, commissions and intergovernmental panels. It manages and administers the Australian Antarctic Science Program (including project requests, assessment, and reporting) and provides scientific and research advice to support regulatory and management decisions. The branch provides scientific advice for Antarctic capability projects, conducts impact assessments and develops strategies to address environmental legacies, and undertakes targeted outreach promoting the value of Australian Antarctic science.

**The Job**
The Polar Atmospheric Dynamicist will lead polar atmospheric dynamical process studies, focussing on their influence on the state of the Antarctic atmosphere and their role in the global climate system. Responsibilities will include:

- conducting scientific research on key polar-atmosphere dynamical processes, their influence on the state of the Antarctic atmosphere and their role in the global climate system,
- evaluation and synthesis of observational data collected from the Davis Atmospheric Observatory and Nuyina to understand small-scale wave and boundary layer processes,
- facilitating national and international collaboration through active research, ongoing observations, and the exchange of data,
- specialist oversight of the operation of the Davis Atmospheric Observatory, including its atmospheric radars and spectrometers, experiment monitoring systems, data storage and data transfer systems,
- recruitment and supervision of the Davis wintering electronics engineer,
- working collaboratively across the AAD and with whole of government partners to deliver the government’s strategic objectives,
- supporting the delivery of national and international engagement activity,
- supporting other branch, divisional and departmental priorities.

The Antarctic Atmosphere Dynamicist will work within the Atmosphere Section, which is embedded within the AAD’s Antarctic Climate Program. The Atmosphere Section undertakes research involving observational and modelling studies to better understand processes, change and variability occurring in the Antarctic and Southern Ocean atmosphere, and the associated implications for Australia and the rest of the globe.

**What we are looking for**

**Knowledge and experience**
- A demonstrated track record in scientific research relevant to the AAD’s interests in the Antarctic atmosphere, particularly in research associated with observational and theoretical studies of atmospheric dynamics, as evidenced through peer-reviewed publications.
- Experience with operating or managing scientific equipment relevant to the current and potential capabilities of the Davis atmospheric observatory.
- A demonstrated track record of fostering collaboration and contributing to a positive and inclusive team culture.

**Skills and capabilities**
- Ability to lead atmospheric research.
- Ability to manage a small technical and scientific team.
- Ability to manage project work and engage with support staff and stakeholders.
- Demonstrated range of personal qualities and interpersonal skills necessary to perform as a successful team member within isolated Antarctic and sub-Antarctic environments.
- Demonstrated ability to effectively adapt and respond to the demands of living and working
