**Program Area**: Welcome & Registration
**Purpose / Objective**
Intake Volunteers play a vital role in assessing the needs of each person or family who present to the Centre, to determine their eligibility in becoming an ASC member.
**Commitment Period**:
Minimum 6-month commitment. The role is offered as ongoing.
**Days and hours required per week**:
Minimum 1 day a week: Monday, Tuesday or Friday, 9.30 am to 4.30 pm
**Training**:
ASC Orientation Session, Core Training and Intake Induction Training.
**Location**:43 Bedford Street, Newtown

**Duties & Tasks**
- To determine the eligibility of referred individuals and families that present to the Centre for the first time.
- To provide an intake, assessment and referral service for people seeking asylum looking for assistance in accordance with ASC guidelines.
- To support people seeking asylum to develop a clear understanding of the processes of seeking protection within Australia and the health, welfare and other support services that may be available to them.
- Ensure clear, objective, accurate and timely file records of client contact and assessment, referrals and interventions.
- Ensure client information on the client database is current and accurate.

**Selection Criteria**
Essential:

- Experience in working with vulnerable people. Experience in undertaking assessments and referrals is desirable
- Understanding of issues affecting people seeking asylum within the current Australian context
- Good oral, written, cross-cultural and interpersonal communication skills
- Ability to work cooperatively in a fast-paced, multidisciplinary team comprised of paid staff and volunteers
- Demonstrated understanding of and commitment to equal opportunities, workplace health and safety and child protection policies
- Flexibility and willingness to take on extra tasks as appropriate
- Ability to adhere to policies in relation to the code of conduct, boundaries and confidentiality.

Desirable:

- Tertiary qualifications in social work, psychology, welfare or another relevant discipline (or currently studying).

- Comply with Work, Health and Safety systems
- Comply with Incident Management Procedures and emergency protocols
- Demonstrate respectful and welcoming behaviour with all people at ASC in culturally appropriate ways
- Undertake a NSW Working with Children Check prior to commencement and ensure it is up-to-date
- Support a child-safe organisation by undertaking screening for suitability to work with children and vulnerable people and to comply with relevant state/territory legislative requirements
