**FEDERAL GOVERNMENT POSITION**
The primary objective of the Metallographer is to provide specialised expertise in the area of metallographic sample preparation in support of materials processing, testing and characterisation.
**DUTIES**:
The key accountabilities for this position include:
- Responsible for metallographic sample preparations of solid and powdered materials in consultation with clients to meet the needs of materials processing, testing or characterisation techniques
- Utilises specialised expertise to assess the viability of proposed approaches, and exercises sound judgement in order to select and provide advice on the most effective techniques and methods
- Provide ongoing consultation and technical advice to Users and liaising with other trade and professional groups to ensure a thorough understanding of User needs
- Work in a highly collaborative way to build and maintain ongoing productive working relationships with internal and external stakeholders
- Ensure that all laboratory activities are conducted in a safe manner and in accordance with the Quality Assurance System, including ensuring staff and visiting technicians are aware of these requirements
- Management of facilities and equipment through an asset management framework and improvement program to ensure reliability of assets, productivity and availability of facility and ensure operational safety, security, sustainability and compliance with applicable standards, legislative and regulatory requirements
- Contributing to and supporting small to medium projects whilst working as a project team member with the aim of completing project activities within time, scope and budget
- Mentor those with a professional need for their specialised knowledge in order to broaden the skill base of the unit
- Provide training and coaching to users, students and other visitors in the laboratory
- Keep up to date with best practice by reading relevant literature and establishes and fosters professional networks in order to access and share information
- Undertake additional duties as required and during period of leave of other staff
**SKILLS & REQUIREMENTS**:
- Degree in Metallurgy, Physics, Chemistry, Materials Science or related discipline
- Extensive experience in specimen preparation for electron microscopy techniques, optical microscopy and microanalysis
- Strong customer focus
- Pro-active in encouraging the sharing of knowledge and experiences within the team
- Highly developed communication skills and demonstrated high-level interpersonal skills and ability to establish and maintain productive working relationships
- Deadline driven, reliable in following through with actions, and pro-active when attending to ANSTO and customer interests
- Ability to prioritise tasks and activities to ensure client deadlines are met
- Ability to adapt work style to accommodate working within a team or an individual worker situation
**WORK TYPE**: 12 Months Casual Position
**HOURS**: 8.30 am - 4.30 pm Monday to Friday
**CASUAL HOURLY RATE**: $56.96/Hour Includes Casual Loading
**FULL FEDERAL GOVERNMENT SECURITY CLEARANCE REQUIRED.
