We are seeking an assistant audience editor to support the audience editor in ensuring Guardian Australia’s journalism reaches the broadest, most relevant audience, including by maximising traffic, SEO and off-platform engagement.

**You’ll be.**
- Working closely with the audience editor to grow Guardian Australia’s audience, whilst also safeguarding editorial standards and values
- Ensuring all stories are optimised for search prior to launch
- Helping maximise referral from key external sources and supporting the development of new referral strategies
- Help define and continually update best practice for digital optimisation with reference to Guardian Australia’s strategy
- Build promotion, format and other audience considerations into the early stages of major editorial projects
- Training editorial staff in best practices for SEO and other key audience measures
- Helping advocate for the use of data in the newsroom, and provide that data
- Assisting in identifying new and emerging platforms and from time to time supporting the development of editorial and business strategies

**You’ll bring.**
- At least 3-5 years experience working in an audience-related role
- A deep understanding of audience development, distribution strategies, and search engine optimisation, particularly for breaking news
- Up-to-date knowledge of social media platforms, off-platform distribution, and internet culture; it’s bonus if you have experience with off-platform social storytelling experience
- Experience in making data-informed editorial decisions
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, along with the ability to collaborate effectively with technical, commercial and editorial teams
- An interest in and an understanding of new technology, and the ability to use different software and production systems comfortably
- A good understanding of the role of Guardian Australia’s role in the Australian media, national news and international news,
- A passion for independent journalism and an understanding of our editorial code and values
